Guest guest
, There is an association between metatarsus adductus and clubfoot. (Dr. Ponseti's book intro here at the Files section discusses it.) M.A. usually resolves on its own without any sort of treatment. In years past interventions were used, but a study done by Dr. Ponseti many years ago I believe found that it wasn't necessary in most cases. Sometimes, though, I believe it is severe enough that a cast or two is used. The treatemnt though would not be nearly as extensive as that for cf. (I believe Dr. Ponseti has said that his paper on treatment for m.a. was understood, adopted and adopted, while his findings on cf, at the same time, were, for whatever reason, ignored, for decades.. ) In my family.. we seem to have had quite a few people whose feet turn in, including me as a baby.. (I wore straight last shoes to sleep in.) but no cases of cf till my daughter was born. But it makes sense to me that they are connected. I hope someone here with direct experience can tell you more .. > hey all... i have a question that i was wanting input on... i get so > excited when we are at Dr Dobb's office and i can't seem to remember > to talk to him about it and i hate to email and bother him... my > nephew (now 16) had a foot that turned in when he walked.. like > actually sideway but he still walked on the bottom of his foot.. and > he would trip over it a lot.. the doctor said not to worry that it > would work itself out.. now you barely even notice that there is > anything there.. just a little " off centered " ... my brother (his > dad) was told to put cowboy boots on the wrong feet because he > walked with his feet turned in a little bit too(that was 40 years > ago)... then there is grace who has severe BCF... and now my neice > (my sister's little girl... 02-11-04) is doing the same thing my > nephew did.. but my sister won't ask the doctor.. i think she > doesn't want her to have to have any treatment like grace has... but > she trips over her foot a lot and it's much worse when she wears > shoes.. it turns in sideways when she takes a step.. does anyone > else have this problem in their family? and should i really be > urging my sister to have abby's foot looked at or leave well enough > alone and hope it turns out like my nephews? thanks.. > > mommy to Grace 12-03-03 BCF Dobbs' Brace 16/
Guest guest
, You know what I would do...Ask Dobbs. He never minds the emails and he would certainly give you an educated opinion that you could at least pass on to your sister. Guest guest
, I have two children, both girls. One 8 years old, and is 5. My oldest was born with normal feet but they were curved inward which at birth they said is extremely normal. Well, for the first 18 months of her life we asked at every well check why her feet were still curved. They said, don't worry, she'll grow out of it. They could manipulate her feet straight without any problems and so that is why they said it wasn't a concern. Well, when she started to walk at 12 months she was intoeing badly. Friends noticed and asked if we had that checked. We FINALLY got a referral from our pediatrician to a ped. ortho surgeon and we went after asking for one ourselves. The specialist told us that she had mild metatarsus adductus and that it would straighten itself in time. They did however say that if we had come earlier, a pair of orthotic shoes for a few months could have sped things up and she wouldn't be tripping the way she is now while she is walking. They said, should we have another baby like this, bring that baby in early and we could speed things along. Well, we ended up bringing that baby in with full blown bilateral clubfoot, different story! Anyway, my 8 year old stopped intoeing a long time ago. It was gradual and it had dissappeared comlpletely by age 4 or 5 if I remember correctly - she started ballet at 5 and I don't remember noticing intoeing during that, maybe just a little but nothing anyone else would have noticed. So, I have heard that metatarsus and clubfoot are related. Dr. Ponseti said that some even refer to it as a mild form of clubfoot. It was all so unexpected to my husband and I because neither of us have any foot problems and no one in our immediate family do either. We do think that my great grandmother probably had bilateral clubfoot but it was never confirmed and she died quite a while ago. Gosh, you brought back memories about how the intoeing is worse with shoes on, 's were the same! She went barefoot most of the time because the shoes just got in the way and made her look worse. Tell your sister it's no big deal and that if your niece is young enough, shoes might help. A lot of time, they just have the kids wear a regular pair of shoes but on the wrong feet. Don't do that without a doctors advice on it though, because you wouldn't want to do anything to harm her feet, it's much better to have the doctor recommend something or perhaps nothing at all. Guest guest
Foot issues run in our family a bit as well, but Kai is the first with CF. My feet actually turn in and down at the ankle at rest. I never had anything done for it, and the only issue I have is I am prone to ankle injury without proper support. DH's brother had something ... his mom says it was CF but I don't think so, i think it was MA. My oldest DD had hyperflexed achilles (I can't remember the medical name for it) and her toes could touch her shins. My second DD has severe flexible MA in both feet and has worn reverse-last shoes to help after her big 2 yr growth spurt (she was tripping on her feet all the time!). She also had " positional clubfoot " where her left foot at birth turned in and up, but it was all muscle issues, no misplaced bones, and was flexible. It self-corrected. In fact,I bet the nurses in OB were appalled when Kai was born ... they mournfully told us of his clubfoot and we LAUGHED and I said " Oh, well, our daughter has crooked feet too!
