Guest guest
Hello and welcome. If your sons foot is relapsing even the slightest bit, his foot probably won't stay in the Markells. If it has relapsed slightly, I think you should go get another cast to fix the relapse before trying the shoes again. The shoes will only be successful if the foot is fully corrected in the first place. Have you tried to make sure his foot/heel is all the way down in the shoe? Please check the tips and tricks list for the FAB in the files section of this site. Also, there may be a reason his foot wasn't staying in the shoe. It could be as simple as not all the way in or simply not tight enough. May I ask where you take your son for treatment? P/M is short for Ponseti s brace AFO-Ankle Foot Orthotic (basically a completely useless piece of equipment for clubfoot treatment) Hang in there, you have come to the right place for help. Guest guest
If your sons foot is relapsing then you need to get him back in casts done by a Ponseti trained physician. Meanwhile contact about getting you a pair of shoes as he can make very tiny ones. Then be sure his foot is completely corrected before you head back in to shoes. Keep us updated! As for the s - not a problem for us from the beginning. Very easy to use and she's never gotten out of them. Chris shoe for my son HI all, My son has a left club foot. He is 10 weeks old. He has been corrected by the Ponseti Method and a tenotamy. Received his DBB a week ago, and in the past 6 days I've been to the orthotist 5 times. No one can keep him in these #@#$%! shoes. I'm curious as to the success people have had with the shoes. Anyone out there have problems with the Markells and switched to the s? I would LOVE to hear from you. Also, a few questions...what do these abbreviations mean p/m fab? afo? Just curious. My son's foot is already relapsing because he hasn't been able to wear his DBB. This is all so frustrating. Guest guest
Hi, again, I'm glad you posted here as well as the other group. I hope you get some good information and help to get your son back on track.. I know how frustrating this must be. Do you have an appt to see the doc about recasting? Does he know about the trouble you've been having with the brace? I think you said you are in Michigan, is that correct? just curious.. is your son being treated by the doc who is listed on Dr. Ponseti's site? I hope you are able to get this resolved soon and that everything gets better soon, take care, > HI all, > My son has a left club foot. He is 10 weeks old. Guest guest
Hi, Im using boots for my daughter. She has been in them for five weeks. I think they are brilliant! I was expecting alot of trouble as she hated casts and didnt sleep very well with them. However with the s she slept so well the first 3days I thought she was ill!! But no, she was fine just more comfy! Ive never experienced a sleepless night yet (unlike the casts). I can put the s on easily by myself (hubby works away) and my daugher has experienced no sores, marks or blisters whatso ever. I must admit never tried the Markells as my daughter has Atypical and Dr Ponseti recommended the s. But s are now being used by lots of kids without Atypical. Me I woulnt believe how good the s have been! Worth a try if you really dont like the Markells. I agree you need to see the docs asap if foot has moved to get re-cast. Hope this helps Julzd and Aurora > HI all, > My son has a left club foot. He is 10 weeks old. He has been > corrected by the Ponseti Method and a tenotamy. Guest guest
Jake had some trouble staying in his shoes too- they put a pad in the heel of the shoe, towards the top lip of the shoe, so there was space in the bottom for his heel. That worked really well, and when his foot got a little bigger they just took the pad out. An idea to ask about.... If it has relapsed slightly, I think you should go get another cast to fix the relapse before trying the shoes again. I went back to the doctor who casted my son with the Ponseti method and I said (exact words), " I'm concerned about my son's foot, its turning back in again. " Doc said to me, " It will do that, next time don't let it go 2 weeks before calling me. " I kind of wanted to SMACK him a good one. You see, my son's last cast came off 2 weeks ago to this date. Had to wait 5 days to even receive his DBB, and then over the next 6 days I visited the orthotist 5 times to try and get the Markells to stay on. I think his words, " don't let it go 2 weeks " were a very poor choice to use with someone who has logged a bizillion hours and 5 trips to an orthotist struggling to get the shoes that he prescribed to fit! AHHHH!!! He agreed that my son's foot was turning back in, but said (in his exact words) " its okay though, because his foot can still be held in correction. " I didn't like that answer AT ALL, so I scheduled him to be recast. THe soonest they can get him in is next week Friday. I'm not sure how long he'll be in casts, but I want to make certain that his shoes arrive shortly after he is out of casts. The shoes will only be successful if the foot is fully corrected in the first place. Have you tried to make sure his foot/heel is all the way down in the shoe? Oh yes, I've tried that. It could be as simple as not all the way in or simply not tight enough. May I ask where you take your son for treatment? I take him to Dr. Hotchkiss, he's located on Michigan Street in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He uses the Ponseti method. He did attend a Ponseti seminar, but did not submit the necessary files to Dr. Ponseti to be approved (we just found all of this out by Dr. Ponseti himself.) I have sent photos to Dr. Ponseti via email and am awaiting his answer. I think that me demanding him to be recast was definatly the right move. Does anyone know how long it takes to get a pair of s? How much time lapses before you get the shoes? P/M is short for Ponseti s brace AFO-Ankle Foot Orthotic (basically a completely useless piece of equipment for clubfoot treatment) Thank you. I was wondering what all those terms meant. Hang in there, you have come to the right place for help. Thanks for your support. . Guest guest
Hi . Well it sounds like your doc is a jerk. I don't know him from Atom, but geeze! He knows the foot can start to relapse in less than 24 hours right out of the casts! Usually they will tell you to have the shoes ready at the last cast removal. 2 weeks, no wonder your son was having trouble. I'm glad they were willing to recast for you. It's great that you emailed Dr. Ponseti. If your sons feet are fine, at least you got an opinion from the 'best' and can be at ease of worry. You may want to consider the Markells one more time. I think the problem was the foot turning back in. It is worth a second try at the very least. If he is still having trouble with the Markells, then at that point maybe try the s. I only say that because of the cost factor. The Markells do work if the feet are fully corrected. Way to be strong with the doc!!! I was naive in the beginning, and boy do I regret it!!! I mean, man, couldn't he have ordered the shoes and bar and had them waiting for me in his office when they took the last cast off....or called the Orthotists and told them to get me right in or something?? I had NO IDEA that my appointment to get the bar five days later was of any concern or that he would relapse so quickly. Guest guest
Been catching up a bit. I agree that it is odd that the brace wasn't ordered before the last cast off. We got a script for ours before our tenotomy, and the doc made sure I knew I was supposed to get an appointment NOW so that the brace would be ready for us. Hope all goes well this time around.
