Hi , the muscle pain and stiffnes have gotten worse for me over

the past month. And, like you, I've had pain in the hip area also.

Most times, I feel that my legs will just give out, and I get this

uneasy feeling that I'm loosing my balance. Last year, my legs weren't

giving me as much trouble, but always hurt, and sometimes my knees

would get stiff. Do you have the feeling of fulness or swelling in

your hands and legs and feet?(especially in the morning). I also have

pain and weakness in my arms. I would keep calling your Neuro until

you get some answers. Hugs...........Donna

I have this also. sometimes, the pain in my legs and hips gets extreme. The

best relief I have gotten is from a muscle relaxer, Skelaxin. I also fill stiff

after sitting and take a few minutes to get going.

Hi Donna,

I have also had that feeling that I am going to fallor my legs give out. Once

not too long ago, I was on the platform of our church ( I had been playing the

keyboard) and all of a sudden, I felt like I was going to fall. Fortunately, I

didn't but it was scary.

That is exactly why I fell several times his year and scared me into moving May

first into Aldersgate Village into one of their Independent Living settings.

When I get out of bed during the night, in the morning etc it is all I can do to

stay on my feet and like I said I have taken falls four times this year. I am

in hopes that I can continue getting around with just my " wheel walker " but???

as my problems similar to yours are making me do a lot of X-tra Praying. Take

,

What you describe has been part of me trying to " relax " in the evening

for as long as I remember. I don't have any suggestions for you, but at

times I need a muscle relaxer before bed or the cramping can really get

out of hand which cause me more pain and stiffness.

Hi Dolores, I have been fortunate to have not fallen.

My balance is off badly at times. But in regards to

the stiffness. I can relate to that. I have to try to

move until my body loosens up, before I can really

trust myself to walk.

Hello, everybody

Its been some time since I posted because I have not been able to spend

too much time on line in the past while. I am ok, but have some

family/personal things that are taking quite a bit of time.

I do want to thank everyone for sharing. It really has helped me to

see others with similar symptoms as mine. I have found great

suggestions on various questions, and I feel that my diagnosis of

probable adult-onset mito myopathy is at least in the ball park.

As far as the stiffness - yes!!! It has been very intense at times.

About 10 years ago, several weeks after a major abdominal surgery, I

had a complex of symptoms flair up hugely. The most pronounced were

shooting pain, muscle weakness, and STIFFNESS. At the time I was

diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, because my RA factor was very

high. (My sed rate and other signs of infection were also high. I

currently believe the infection could have weakened my symptoms, and

set off a mito flair) Since that time I came to the conclusion, and my

current doctors agrees, that I did not have RA. I had no " classical "

manifestations, and my symptoms, except for the stiffness, was never

symetrical, which was my understanding about RA. Anyway, the stiffness

is less problematic for me now, but I still experience some. Moving

is/ was the key for me - the more I moved, the more it dissipated. At

its worse I set the alarm in the middle of the night and got up and

marched around for a few minutes. I did not trust that I could get up

if I stayed in bed all night long. Even though the stiffness has been

mild for a long time now, I still find myself wanting to move

frequently. Short bursts, but moving. For example, I will not sit in a

movie theater for the entire time. I get up and walk in the back once

or twice. It just feels right to do. I don't know why. I have posted

before about the muscle weakness - I have found some resistance muscle

work, done very carefully, along with creatine and the mito coctail has

helped me regain some strength, especially in my upper body, where it

was most pronounced. I also have come to the conclusion, with help

from a thoughtful doc, that episodes of unusual pain in various parts

of my body were probably due to inflamation of tendons resulting from

too much physical stress on them, which resulted from the muscles not

being able to do their fair share. These episodes have also greatly

subsided since I am more careful with my body mechanics and have

regained some muscle strength. But for me, use it (carefully) or lose

it is still the rule. Don't know if this is making any sense to anyone

else. Thought I would try to express it.

Wishing you all well, and enjoyment of the Spring!

Best Regards

Sunny

I get the stiff hip and legs if I have been sitting more than an hour. When I

get up I am also staggering. I found that i need to keep changing my leg

position and how I am sitting quite frequently and also get up more. People at

my new temp job thought I was going to fall a couple times when it happened last

week. I had a strange thing happen last year at the temp job I had been at for

a year. My calves and feet would get very swollen after sitting at work for a

few hours--would not happen at home. Went to the doctor and she did not know

why but thought maybe I was sitting differently. Turns out that I had gotten a

new chair at work and sitting for long periods of time was cutting off my

circulation.

I also find that the muscle pain and stiffness becomes worse when I do not take

the qgel and carnitor for a couple of days as I am supposed to.

I too get such severe leg pain, weakness and stiffness. Often my left leg

groin muscle doubles in size, and is like a rock!, I wondered if this

happened to anyone else?. The last six months I have been extremely wobbly

and almost dizzy everytime I tried to stand, I now have to use my walking

stick or wheelchair as walking more than a few metres has me trembling and

quivering in my leg muscles with severe stabbing pain. I get worse if I have

hot baths, it's almost like I am cooking my own muscles. This has always

been my worst symptom though and when I am in a flare it is unbearable. Does

anyone have any ideas as to how to keep myself from radiating so much heat,

especially at night other than pain killers?

Thanks

I get the same pain, stiffness and knotted muscle. My calves have been

hard for as long as I can remember. In this case it is

psedohypertrophic (damaged muscle fibers which have turned to scar

tissue). What you are describing with your groin sounds like a muscle

cramp.

Hot baths cause an increase in symptoms as it takes a lot of energy to

heat or cool the body. I use a bath chair and hand held shower and

warm water (rather than hot). I turn the water off or airm it at the

side of the shower when soaping up my body. This way the heat is only

once in awhile.

I take a muscle relaxant, but not pain medication other than an

anti-inflammatory for my arthritis. The thing that I have found that

helps the most is to take a nap where I actually sleep for at least a

half hour. This seems to recharge the energy to the muscle cells. If I

start getting a cramp, I move immediately. This usually means putting

the side down on my bed and getting up. I can occasionally break the

cramp at the beginning by moving while still in bed or recliner. My

muscles will continue to be tight and hurt, even when the majority of

the cramp is gone. I will sometimes be up for an hour when this

happens. I'm beginning to think that my body needs to be fueled

throughout the night, so will be trying some different things to eat

before bed. I'll let you know how this works.

Have you ever tried Magnesium Orotate for your cramps Laurie? I have heard it

can help with cramps. You know the saga with my daughter Penny and her

intensive pelvic pain which was around period time but made worse not better by

bc pill - well I am now trying her on 800mg Mg Orotate at doc's suggestion to

see if it was a mito cramping and so far she has just had mild pain this time.

May be just coincidental but time will tell.... (she is now confirmed with

I am on 1500 mg. mag. orotate in addition to 2000 mg. mag. oxide. My

kidney's spill lots of mag. and this keeps it in the low normal range.

My docs hate to raise it as it has a laxative effect (Milk of

Magnesia). The Baclofen is helping, but I only get about 4 hours

coverage out of 8 hours. It is hard to fit in enough sleep that way

and still have some kind of life.

I hope the mag. orotate continues to help Penny. I have noticed

improvement in other areas of my mito.

I have never been able to take " hot " baths. Lukewarm is the best for me. I

also cannot stay but 5-10 minutes in the whirlpools and saunas at hotels without

feeling nauseous and dizzy.

Laurie,

Thanks for the advice. I will start to fuel my muscles at bed time also I

think. The shower chair is great, I only got it a couple of weeks ago and

it has made a big difference already.

I used to take Baclofen for the spasms and cramps but it made be feel sick

and have migraines, hence I stopped taking it.

If anyone has heard of another drug that might help please let me know.

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

I wonder if part of my problem is my neuropathy as part of the time both feet

afeel like they must weigh 100 pounds each and there is numbness to mid-calf.

II just am to the point I don't trust myself any longer as I am having so many

concerns with my legs. Dr. Barohm at KU said he also leans toward a

Mitochondrial dysfunction.

fortunate to have not fallen.

My balance is off badly at times. But in regards to

the stiffness. I can relate to that. I have to try to

move until my body loosens up, before I can really

trust myself to walk.

Believe you and me, by just reading your reply about

the hot baths, or whirlpools made me feel pain. I

can't go near hot water. It has to be more cool than

warm. I have a temperature problem since being

diagnosed with mito. Everyone thought it was the

changes, but I no one thing I could never even as a

kid deal with hot baths or sauna's etc. I feel like my

muscles are in burning mode.

hello I was tested two years ago for Mito Myopathy. I am 29yo man from Buffalo

NY and I am on Oxycontin

40 mg 3 x a day for the pain. is anyone on pain killers for to treat the pain?

I have pain all over my body and there is not alot to treat it with it so far

spread of the body.

I have had lots of success with pain control with Lamictal (an

anticonvulsant). I started it for my myoclonus, but it also reduced

the pain. I still had severe cramping, so I also take a muscle

relaxant.

Hi ,

Pain has always been my worst symptom. I, too, have pain all over my

body. I was on fentanyl for several years (it's a cousin of oxycontin;

they are both morphine derivatives). After awhile, I felt that the

side effects outweighed the amount of help I was getting from it. (I

know everyone gets different side effects and different amounts of

pain relief). I still have hydrocodone and morphine on hand to get me

through particularly bad days or days when I want to do more than I

usually can (like go to a wedding or something). But generally, I've

found that I can keep the pain at a dull roar by monitoring how much

activity and rest I get. And meditation has helped me a lot to find

some peace despite the pain. Anyway, that's just my story--everyone is

helped by different things. But if it helps to know, we are not alone

in being in pain all over each day.

Best,

Shayna

Read all of the emails but have not been able to get anyone to answer my

previous questions...so I am going to try another one. Does anyone have gout

or something similar? My husband, who has Mitochondrial Myopathy, has had pain

and swelling in his foot especially in the big toe. He was tested three times

for gout but came back negative. Would appreciate any replies.

I have Mitochondrial Myopathy, MERRF, and I have had pain and swelling in my

big toes for years. I have not found anything yet that helps. Sorry I can;t

give you any answers that help. Sometimes massaging helps for a short while.

emails but have not been able to get anyone to answer my previous questions...so

I am going to try another one. Does anyone have gout or something similar?

My husband, who has Mitochondrial Myopathy, has had pain and swelling in his

foot especially in the big toe. He was tested three times for gout but came

back negative. Would appreciate any replies. Cathy Irene Sussmann
