I have been hearing alot about different shoes on the bar. I am now

wondering what kind of shoes your children all have on the bar, my

son's look like a white open toed high-top that laces and buckles.

Isn't there any way we or they can put a more comfortable shoe on them

or do they make a better shoe/brace.

Can you get the Markell's (I think that is what they are called) with

a bar or will they work to put on the bar yourself!

Thank you,

Jill

Hello Jill.

The Markells, which is the shoe you described, come by themselves and the

bar comes separately. There are 2 types of bars that go with the Markell

shoes: a gold, fixed length bar and a red, adjustable bar. Many prefer

the red adjustable bar because when the baby grows, you don't have to keep

getting a new bar.

There is another type of shoe and brace altogether which is the Ponseti

brace or P/M (abreviated on this site). This shoe looks like a

Berkinstock (sp?) style sandle and a silver adjustable bar. No other

style bar can be used with the P/M's.

There is also a special brace Dr. Dobbs has developed, which only a few of

his patients have. His bar allows the babies feet to move a little bit

more independantly. I believe there are different shoes that can be used

with this bar. , maybe you can describe it better.

They are separate, but should come at the same time. The shoes are made to

attach to the different bars, they have a hard sole with sunken screw

receptacles (2). Depending on what bar you use, the bar comes with sole

plates (different plates for different bars) that you screw to the bottom

of the shoes. The DBB bar is actually somewhat of a misnomer, the DBB is

referring to the Dennis Browne Bar which is named for the guy who first

started using it. The bar that is in use now is not exactly that DBB bar

but people still use the name kind of across the board for all shoes

attached together by a bar. Any DBB bar you can buy commercially in the

states will be made for the Markell shoes. There is one kind of attachment

point that's different, and it consists of a kind of clamp which holds the

soles in place. It clamps on the edges of the soles, however when Markell

introduced the new and improved Ponseti Open Toe Boots in October, 03 those

shoes came with a smaller lip which doesn't works with the clamps as well.

The correct term for this brace is actually a Foot Abduction Bar or FAB for

short. Naomi posted a description of how Dennis Browne corrected clubfeet

which was kinda horrific which has kinda made us not want to use that term

anymore. It wasn't gentle like the Ponseti Method is... DBB is much

easier to type though lol so it kinda comes out a lot. And the orthotists

use it almost exclusively it seems.

There are 3-5 different bars available, maybe more obsure ones too. But

the main ones are the Fillauer (red) adjustable, Fillauer (red) fixed

length, Gold (I think Markell but I'm not sure, I know they distribute it)

fixed length, Gold S-M-L fixed (these have three holes in each end, so you

just move up a hole rather than getting a whole new bar) and a Gold

adjustable in which you can move where the feet are set by loosening a

screw and sliding them out or in. These are the ones that work with the

Markell shoes.

Come join our picture list and take a peek at some shoes and bars in the

photo library

there.

Don't forget to send back the survey, once we get that you can be approved

and go look at all the pics there. I also have some pics of the gold and

red adjustable bars I could send you if you want to see something in

particular. Just let me know what you're looking for.
