Guest guest
Hi My son going into kindergarten needs a label for school... I guess they need to be specific... Well He was diagnosed autistic at 3 ,, but he has made lots of progress... They want to label him speech impaired or something like that... I told them that I don't know because I want him to get all the services in the future... they are very good about providing services I think... I am not unhappy with what they are providing... Question is what would be best .... I really don't know what this means for his future... Right now everything is in place and I really have no complaint with the school... Would changing his label to speech impaired be better or worse???? Help.......kelly

But - when Nicky was to start school in Jan after he turned 3 - they at first suggested to label him speech impaired. We saw this as a real problem. In our mind - the way for us to push for more services is to have the " bigger " label of autism (which he was diagnosed as when he was just 2). donna
Guest guest
* I am a parent advocate in my sons school district and to be sure, a label of autism allows more services then speech impaired. I would not allow the label to be changed no matter how much progress he has made, he could regress with less services. If labelling my son " a martian " would allow him more services I would do it, but I will never accept a label that can almost guarentee less services. on Long Island New York * ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Guest guest
I would have to say , it may be worse because there are more service hours available for autism{ at least in my area} I am going to be facing the same situation soon as my son will transition into the school district in aaugust. He is so much improved on this diet, they may also want to reclassify him but I dont think I want to. I want services available if we need them. Guest guest
If you are planning on keeping your son in public school, I would NOT change the autism label. The school district attempted this with me once and I didn't notice it. Fortunately, my attorney caught it before I signed it and made sure that it was changed. Although you don't have to be mean about it, NEVER trust the school district. Just my 2 cents, Liberty Re: Label for my son > Hi > My son going into kindergarten needs a label for school...
