Guest guest
Interesting, my uncle had gout, and a few years later started getting mitochondrial disease symptoms, like neuropathy, stroke-like episodes with no brain MRI changes, and weakness. But he definitely had gout - I would suggest you check eMedicine for other symptoms of gout. My uncle had crystals in his big toe and ear lobes, but I believe there are other symptoms. Could your husband have rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis in his toe? Lyme disease can also cause joint swelling and immobilization, and mito-like symptoms. Take care, RH > > Read all of the emails but have not been able to get anyone to answer my previous questions...so I am going to try another one. Does anyone have gout or something similar? My husband, who has Mitochondrial Myopathy, has had pain and swelling in his foot especially in the big toe. He was tested three times for gout but came back negative. Would appreciate any replies. > > Cathy
Guest guest
Cathy, I can relate to the gout problem -- or non-gout problem (really). This is the symptom that looking back was the beginning of the end of my life as a NORMAL. I was thought to have gout (but tested negative). My gout like pain (both big toes were inflamed) was eventually determined to be a yeast overgrowth issue. When I was treated for that, the problem resolved and hasn't returned. Unfortunately, they tried a steroid drug with me before they thought of the yeast problem and I highly suspect that the steroid drug caused my unknown, underlying mito/metabolic problem to progress. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia shortly after the " toe " problem. When I used a topical cream containing corticosteroids, seven years later - my health further declined and I was evaluated for mito.
