Guest guest
It's Day 9 here at Potty-Central. I have been off list for that long and I told everyone I would update with the techniques we are using for potty training. During the day, Aidan has been living in just a T-shirt and his " big-boy underwear " (cloth briefs). We started by telling him to say " I want potty " and then taking him into the bathroom. He stayed on the potty until he went and then was praised " up one side and down the other " . We started with 5 minutes off the potty and then put him back on until he peed. He always has to stay on until he produced something, even if it's only a dribble. Gradually we have worked our way up to about 30 minutes between trips to the potty. YEA!! It's not nearly as hard as I thought it would be, though having his ABA therapists here has certainly helped a lot. We used a potty seat insert on the regular toilet and it wasn't long until he could climb up there himself. We have even gotten him to say " I'm all done " . Besides praising, he would get to watch part of a favorite video or get a pretzel or cookie after he had a success. We are currently fading watching the video as a reward. Today he used a different toilet than the one we primarily used and without the insert. We mostly have him on a schedule and keep a " potty log " of when we should take him back to the bathroom, but he does request sometimes when he needs to go. For those kids who are non-verbal, having a PECS picture of the potty would probably work just as well for them to request to go. We haven't yet worried about nighttime. I just put him in a diaper at night when he gets his pajamas on. So far this hasn't confused him. We have pretty much stayed at home for these 9 days, but the times I have had to go out I have been putting a Pull-up on Aidan. I've gotten really long-winded here, but as you can see I am really excited that this has gone so well and the best thing is that he is excited about going on the potty and getting that praise. And I'm sure that after 4 years in diapers that he is really glad for things to breath down there! .........Just had to share....... Guest guest
Yeay! Go Aiden! I talked to our ABA therapist today (we just started..now have had 5 sessions). We're going to start in about 6 weeks! I can hardly wait! My SIL set us back a bit recently. ON Monday, she put on the potty while she was passing a really hard BM (sorry to be graphic). She did go on the potty but it hurt so now she associates pain with the potty! Yikes! Constipation has always been her problem. Thanks for sharing! I do think the diet has helped her...made her more alert, better eye contact, better listening. Hugs, H
