Hey Laurie,

I just saw your posting to Lolita, in the GFCF group. I too feel very stronly

that SI is an important problem that parents might be overlooking.

Many spec needs kids have SI issues. The kids I have seen with Autism really

have sensory problems that just scream out 'help me'. My son has been on

Prozac, Wellbutrin, etc. NOTHING has helped as much as setting up a sensory

diet, and sticking to it. I now only takes clonidine at night, and cod liver

oil. At school he gets deeppressure every hour to 90 mins.

He is amazing, The first week at school, he asked for and ATE a hamburger.

Danny is 8, and has never asked for or eaten a hamburger. Please do keep

telling people about this. I am reading 'The Out of Scync Child. I have a lot

of time on my hands right now, I am in a cast with a broken ankle.

Do you know of a site where SI is disscused ?

Thanks, Bev in No Cal

Lolita,

Have you heard about Sensory Integration Dysfunction?? Does you child have

behavior issues?? Is he on the diet for allergies or Autism reasons. All

children with Autism have issues with this. There is tons of information I

would be happy to share with you, if you haven't heard about it! My guess

is, you have, but I wanted to offer, if you haven't. It is still has very

low awareness. I am trying to change that! Thanks,, Laurie Renke

Okay, not something serious, but does anyone have any idea why a kid

would want to stand on his head all the time? I have one who has been doing

this for a couple of years now, which upsets his dad.

I figure it's just one of those quirky things kids do, but wondered if

anyone had some thoughts.

That's what I said. My son did this very thing for quite sometime. He would

function better upside down. He would manipulate toys better upside down.

Then he would get up and walk up and down steps better. Its an inner ear

thing. It helps to quikcly organize the vestibular system. The rush of

blood to the head and to the ears. SI-OT helped my son so much with his

sensory issues, he no longer does this.

Remember we are so new to this! But we did take her to an OT for private

eval...didn't trust the school district and THAT is another topic! Anyway, we

knew she had sensory issues. The OT wrote a recommendation for 2 hours of

one-on-one OT per week and a sensory diet! Yeah! I'm in the process of reading

the Out of Sync Child...among other books too! I figure I'll never catch up on

all the reading I need to do!

BTW we started her ABA program 10 days ago...she's had 6 sessions and is doing

great! We've been entirely gfcf for 9 weeks now!
