Contaminated Drinking Water

Does anyone know how long (for how many days or hours) you have to boil water

when the local supply has experienced a break and the water enterign the house

is contaminated? Our village main broke late this afternoon and the water is

cloudy and has an off odor. They haven't issued a boil order yet, but I'm

afraid to use it. Called the local police and they said don't drink or swallow

it, the village hall may make a statement tomorrow!!!

The American Water Works Association says 3 minutes:

& that matches what I've always been told - it doesn't take long.

That only works for biological contamination and not chemical, of

course, but it sounds like only the former is what you might be

dealing with.

I would suggest some bottled water until a statement is made. Boiling

will kill germs, but not chemical pollutents, so please be careful.
