Guest guest
A recent publication of the DCA test run by the Mito Center at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in NYC indicates that DCA does lower central nervous system lactic acid levels. BUT it also causes paralysis and pain throughout the peripheral nervous system. The conclusion: DCA is NOT a drug to use with mitochondrial cytopathies. I participated in the study and received the DCA. Within a few weeks I was unable to walk or even stand. The pain was horrendous. It has taken well over a year to regain function once off the DCA. I still have a peripheral neuropathy in both feet which began while on the DCA. While DCA was touted several years ago as a possible way to reduce the ravages of lactic acid on the brain, the side effects are so severe it has been stopped. a (MELAS)

Guest guest
a, unfortunately in 1998 I was gripping for hope with anything and went on DCA. I too developed terrible peripheral neuropathy, in fact my prorioception was so messed up I thought my legs were bend at the knees over my shoulders. I ended up in a coma to semi coma for over 5 weeks. I needed to learn to walk again, among other things. They do feel this was prob a DCA interaction with neurontin, but nothing I would ever want to go through again. Still 8 years later I have peripheral neuropathy and terrible muscle pain. I understand what you are going through and wish you the best. Martha (MELAS)

I heard this same thing at the recent conference. It does not appear that this is a viable treatment for mito.
