Guest guest
My son does the taking a drink thing from a cup and then spits it in the floor. He has sensory issues. Also he has oral sensitivities. Good luck, for his soy milk, I can still only get him to drink it from a bottle, he is 3 1/2, everything else he will drink from a sippy cup or a regular cup. He loves to use a straw also. CASSIE

She says that with all the therapy and testing and such that he's going through, it's become like a security blanket for him.. That he likes the sensory input he gets from it and it's comfortable for him.. ANd that if it were something like a binky or a fav. teddy bear, we wouldn't pull him off it cold turkey anyway, we'd wean him off it. So that's what we're doing.. We're working on getting him to drink from straws first, once we're there, we'll move on to sippy cups and then regular cups.. But to take him off it all at once and just say " tough luck, kid.. there's the cup.. drink " is too harsh for him, in both our opinions... is a very strong willed child, on top of being non-verbal, autistic, and hearing impaired.. Makes for a very challenging child to try to break of habits, but we're working on it. He'll steal his sister's sippy cup full of coke in a heartbeat and drink it down.. it's that he *won't* do it if *I* give it to him.. If *I* want him to, forget it... I've tried this.. didn't work in our situation at the time, but perhaps another go might be worth a try.. She gave her lots of " wet " fruit and checked with the Dr. for the two weeks it took. No dehydration...she was getting enough liquid in fruits and other foods. Now she's drinking juice and rice milk and eating a variety of foods. Maybe you can weather it without any real drinking...
Guest guest
Just to jump in on this discussion, my son is 6 now, but I remember that he had the same issues when going from the sippy cup to a cup with a straw when he was about 4 (he never had a bottle so we didn't have that problem). Now that he is a little older and we've survived the transition, I can say that in our case, I think it was more of an issue of routine/sameness that caused my son to resist the changes. We also had the oral defensiveness/tactile sensory issues, but when I first introduced the straw he resisted until I only offered water (which he doesn't like) in the sippy cup and put his favorite drink in the cup with the straw. I think that the reason his " protest " only lasted about an hour was because I left him in control. I didn't make it a power struggle. Both cups were there and HE could choose which one he wanted to drink. But then again, who knows?? Maybe I just got lucky. I also would have given in if he went a whole day without drinking. Good luck, Liberty bottles only ma!!! > , > Finally I find someone who's having the same problem as me! My son Dominic is 45 months old.....yes...almost 4, and is still bottle only so far. He pulled the same thing as your child, not drinking for the entire day. I'm like, " If you want to drink, your cup will be right here. " By the end of the day I was so worried that he was going to dehydrate, that I was trying to get him to drink from the bottle and he wouldn't!! He was probably thinking.... " I'll show her!! " Of course he took the bottle later, after he made me sweat it out for a while!! > Anyway, now I understand that he has SID, and we are working on his oral tactile issues. He still won't drink from the cup yet, but he will pretend that he's going to, and then spits the liquid onto the floor and laughs. Guest guest
Yes he does, and funny but the olny time he will take a sip from a cup he also spits on the floor, I did not think he had any oral tactile issues but maybe that is why he is hanging on to the ba. all of his other sensory issues are much better with gf/cf. F bottles only ma!!! > , > Finally I find someone who's having the same problem as me! My son Dominic is 45 months old.....yes...almost 4, and is still bottle only so far. My son would spill the drink out of the cup when we took the sippy/top part off of it. We knew he was able to drink from a cup but he resisted for some time. He still prefers a straw as in his box juices but he also does well with cups now. When you mention spitting out this caught my attention. still does this with food quite often. In some cases he seems to be chewing and sucking the juice out of a food, then spitting it out. This can happen with almost anything. Sometimes though he'll just eat it; I don't know how to predict ahead of time which it'll be. And sometimes he'll just stuff his mouth with food until it's overloaded, then spit it all out. Which is much better than if he tried to swallow all that... Also wanted to mention that we finally found a GF/CF macaroni that he just loved, after rejecting the others we've tried. Ancient Harvest Quinoa Supergrain Pasta, which has corn and quinoa. just loved it, and they say they're gluten free. Marty
Guest guest
Non of my kids had bottles, but all breast fed till they were over three years old. Makes for a lot of criticism. I believe in a natural setting these kids would need to suckle till four or more. Cutting them off totally is too harsh. I agree with .
