Guest guest
----- Specialist visit went well....Developmentally he is well, and thats great!!!! We will be seeing the endocrinologist in March to see where he is plugging on the charts, but he is still mighty damn small. He does not have FTT...He eats like a pig, and just doesn't grow in kenght or weight, so The doc thinks ist a case of genetic short stature. They are going to do bone growth scans and take som GH blood tests in March as well. Do you all mind if I stay an lurk a little? It is nice to know that there are others out there that have the same problem with having a small child, that doesn't meet the height requirment an average child does in height or build. I appreicate the info!!! He has been to GI and at the time he didn't think it was related to his practice because he eatslike a pig but doesn't throw up or show signs of foul stools. We will probaly go back just review some other GI issues besides CF. Mathieu and others were 6-7 pound babies. 18-19 inces long. Not heavy or large by any means but on the chart at @ 50% He has dropped signifiucantly off the charts which is odd, but I am not terribly alarmed, he is a smart little cookie. HIs head was incorrectly measure at my last doc visit....He is tracking at the 50% level. HIs weight isn't coming up no matter how much I put in his body, I think he is getting the nutrients out of the food, and metabolizong fine, just a short skinny but proportianate baby I guess. The development specialist did dmention BMI....Mathieu is plotting in the 25% for his BMI. He was in the 50% around 3 months ago......Does anyone have any info on the BMI's and what to look for? Thanks I am hoping that you will repost again after your specialist visit. Without knowing other information (like do you have other children and were they perhaps 9-10lb babies?), right off the bat, it sounds like your son is experiencing failure to thrive. Because of what I do not know, but it sounds suspiciously GI related (since you already know about the silent reflux). Length can be greatly impacted by being underweight. The head jump I can't comment on medically -- no experience there. I have read that a child's head circ will often jump after birth because a child be be small in- utero and then experience catch-up growth. What type of specialist are you seeing? Has your pediatrician referred you to a good Children's Hospital with a good pediatric GI specialist? That is truly who I think should be treating your son at this point, based in the information you have written below. Most endocrinologists do not " treat " weight issues, Dr. Harbison in New York is a unique one. And most GI doctors don't treat height issues. I would focus on the weight issues and if you can get his weight up, you may find the length comes along as well. Salem > Hi all I found you by chance of searching for answers for my own son. I am not sure what problem we are facing with our 1 yr old (1/3/03) but my husband and I are going to see a specialist on Friday. I decided to do soem digging before I go so I will have soem knowledge just in case. > > When I was pregnant with him, later in the term my Fundal growth had slowed significantly, at 37 weeks I was measuring at only 33cm (the numbers are supposed to match or be closer than 4 cm apart) They did an ultrasound and although he wasn't listed as IUGR (perfect weight and measurements) his femure bones were much smaller than average. He was measuring at 28 weeks in leg growth. Docs were not alarmed because arms were measuring normal. > > When he was born he was a healthy 7lb 5oz and 19.6 inches. Over the next 3 1/2 months he was right on target on the 25-50%. At around 5 months I took him in for Silent Reflux for meds. (not throwing up, but he was choking alot and having difficulty swallowing) He was doing well, but losing weight and not growing in length. He is now well below the 3% line at 17 lb 1 oz, and 26 1/2 inches. The reflux has cleared up no meds for that > > He has gained very little since his 4 month less than 3 pounds, and his lenght has increased by 1 1/2 inches. > > HIs head has me concerned.....While he is not growing in length and weight as he was before, his head has jumped two percentiles, from the 25% to the 75%..... > > I am extremely worried...Any info is greatly appreciated. I am a 27 yr old mom of two boys 4 yr old , and Mathieu my little tiger 1 yr old just recently. > > TIA, > > Jay > >
