Guest guest
not in the price. In our property taxes and income taxes. they still get the money, it's just not by way of a sales tax. A refrigerator costs $1000, that's what you pay. It scares me that should a large expensive item be wanted or needed that you're ending up paying so much more for it because it's expensive. I couldn't imagine buying a car and then having to tack on 8%. ouch! I like it like this... a candy bar is 2 for $1... you hand them a dollar bill and walk away with your candy bars. Pretty slick huh? Kori At 07:17 AM 2/8/2005, you wrote: >Same here, Missouri and Illinois both will tax you til you drop. Guest guest
Gas in running about $1.79/gal around here for reg. and then the tax. Which seems to fall in line with about everywhere else. I don't know where they get the $ to pay the attendants but they don't get tips and make minimum wage. And yes, I love being waited on! I'd be pretty darn upset if they changed the laws here. Plus it gives people a job. kori At 08:02 AM 2/8/2005, you wrote: >That is just not right! But yeah, if you make moves to touch the pump the attendant does freak out a bit. Next time I go get gas I'll ask about this law and what it means and report back lol. >My understanding is that all states used to have laws forbidding self >service but that only a few states have kept those laws. In OR, it was a >populist kind of move to ensure jobs for pump jockeys(that's what my >husband calls them--is that a terribly politically incorrect term?). yes, that's true. Apparently we did feel at one point when everyone else was going self serve that we wanted to keep these jobs open. In Oregon it's true when you say *it's not like he can't pump gas* (referring to those people who won't get a job). I do believe that going self serve also had something to do with the highly toxic effects of benzene which is in gasoline. Interestingly enough, as far as OSHA is concerned all employers must be very careful with benzene and the allowable PPM is rather low, there's a whole standard for Benzene in the code (CFR) and it's a huge deal as far as industrial hygiene. But if you're a gas station attendant you can spill the stuff all over yourself because you're exempt from the Benzene standard. Go figure... >Gas is at $2.23 here on the North Coast of CA. Unfortunately, by the time you get as far away from the border as Seattle the reciprocity thing doesn't work anymore. You tell them you're from Oregon and don't want to pay sales tax and they look at you like you've got 3 heads. Works pretty good in Vancouver though.
