Guest guest
I wonder why your doctor is not following the Ponseti protocol. Keeping them on at later ages is occasionally a problem, but rarely. Only a few parents on the board here have expressed problems in this area (and duct tape solved that! haha). Yes, from 23 hours it drops to 18, I believe up until they are walking, unless they are late walkers. Five months of 23 hours is really not necessary and may cause more harm than good I would think. Keep an eye on that red spot. If it darkens in color is probably is a pressure sore. s. reduced wear time... Hello - my son Adnan (6.29.04, lcf, no tenotomy) has been in the shoes now for 5 months 23/7. His doc suggested that we try to keep him in full-time as much as possible for 6 months b/c it would be more difficult to keep him in the shoes later. E.g maximize time in the shoes now, before he really starts moving around and protesting. Has anyone else had this experience? For those of you who have reduced full-time wear after three months, what is the reduced time? 20 hrs, 18 hrs??? He also has a developed a red blotch on the top of his foot. It is not open or weeping - but is very red. could this be the beginning of a pressure sore? Thanks,
Guest guest
Hi , My son's doctor also recommended that he be in the shoes 23/7 for an extended period of time. We just reduced his hours. He wore his dbb 23/7 until he was 6.5 months old (5 months). Now the doctor wants him in them only nights but I am being a bit more cautious and keeping him in them 16 hours a day. However, the little wiggle worm can wiggle himself right out of the shoes. I am going to take them to a local orthotic store this weekend and see if they can replace the strap on the shoe. It is stretched out and I can't get it tight enough. I can't pull it to the next hole because I am afraid that it is going to break. As for the red mark, I don't know what is causing that unless he is trying to free himself from the shoes and is putting a lot of pressure on that area. Just keep an eye on it. Guest guest
I read the letter on that link. I am a little confused, I hear some parents using it for 10 to 12 hours......but according to that letter 14 is the minimum.... I am disheartened for a moment, I was looking forward to a day of less than 14. s. Guest guest
Hmmmmm, I just need to buck up I guess. I admit I am tired of the DBB and I have a looooong way to go with it. s. Guest guest
Most everything I have read says that it is 12-14 hours as the last reduction. Our Doc told us to wear while sleeping but no less than 12 hours. So if that entails night and nap or just night whatever but a minimum of 12 hours. Doctors seem to give different hours and I have even noticed Dr. Ponstei himself giving slightly different advice for different circumstances. So, Kelsey wears them 12 hours. Guest guest
Just wondering if the majority of the people here do the full say 8hrs off then put the shoes on for the rest of the hours or if you take them off for 5 then put them back on when the baby naps during the day then off again? Does it make much of a difference if the baby naps without the shoes for 2 hours? Guest guest
When Owen was younger and naps were unpredictable, I put the brace on at 7pm and kept it on until after 9am the following morning (14 hours) which worked well. It wasn't until he was about 18 months that he began to take regular, predictable, naps everyday. At that time, I began breaking it up. The brace goes on at around 7pm and comes off around 7am and then it goes back on right after lunch (which is nice now because it signals to him that it is time to wind down because it's 'naptime' which I don't even have to say anymore) and comes off after his nap which is usually 2-3 hours. Guest guest
At least in our case, Kelsey wears her brace for 12 hours at night and then we are done. SHe does nap during the day without the brace. Guest guest
I've never done the nap routine because Everett isn't the greatest napper in the world....so we just do the full 14 at one go, at night and in to the next morning. s. Guest guest
, Your dr. sounds like ours. Who do you see? We are in Atlanta and see dr. sy. When he told us our times (23 hours/day until she crawled), I wrote to Dr. Ponseti because I had read that 23 hours was only needed for 3 months. Here is what Dr. P wrote to me. Quote May 28, 2004 We have observed that after three months of full time brace wear, night and naptime for a total of 16-18 hours are sufficient to prevent a relapse. Once the child is walking about 12-14 hours is adequate. I see no reason to have the child wear the brace 23 hours a day until she is crawling. Straight last shoes are usually more comfortable and are adequate to maintain the correction. Reverse last shoes are not necessary. I.V. Ponseti, M.D. Unquote Also, our dr. is recommending we take her out of the brace at 2 1/2. I will leave her in it at night until she is 4 to prevent relapse. I don't really understand why doctors feel they should reduced this based on the idea that the " child won't tolerate it " . She will do what I tell her to do if it is for her own good. As long as you make it into a positive it may work. Louisa Rachael 6-27-99 Zoe 2-22-04 RCF FAB 16/7 > > Hello - my son Adnan (6.29.04, lcf, no tenotomy) has been in the > shoes now for 5 months 23/7.
