What a jerk. My surgeon told us to have a dozen more and that all

would be healthy and happy because of my surgery. I am so sorry

that they told you that. You may not even be considered high risk!

Many women aren't. If you want the baby then go for it, take you

regular vitamins until you meet with your ob and go from there.

I'd have some sincere concerns about a surgeon that would tell you

something so completely asenine and false. He obviously isn't a

very educated surgeon.

Many post-wls babies are born perfectly healthy and being post-wls

does not automatically put you in the high risk category. As long

as your nutrition levels are well and you are taking your vitamins

and fluids as every pregnant woman should, your surgery should not

adversely affect your pregnancy. There are exceptions to this, so I

would find an OBGyn who will be willing to work with you and keep a

closer eye on your blood levels.

There is a lot of support on this site and plenty of women who are

traveling the same road as you and are doing fine.

in my own personal and professional opinion, you should get a NEW

doctor as the one you were told this from appears to be a QUACK!

There is no reason as long as you take your

vits/IRON/calcium/protein/water that you won't have a happy, healthy,

bouncing baby! (take a look at my profile pic to reassure yourself!)

There is over 1,500 people in here and the majority will agree with

me on this.....

Babies are a gift from God!

I wanted to add that (in my own opinion from what I have

observed/read/researched/studied-etc) some of us post WLS have *some

increased difficulty getting and staying pregnant* and to terminate

just b/c you have had surgery is no reason at all!!!! I was my OB's

first WLS patient and we kinda learned things together (some the hard

way) and although I was 147# lighter, I was 9 years older and I had a

very difficult pregnancy. I wasn't all peaches and roses, but hey, I

have a beautiful baby boy to love and cherish and THAT'S what matters

most to me!

I am appalled at the lack of caring this " doctor " is expressing for

you and your unborn child!! RUN, DON'T WALK to a doctor who knows

what they are doing, most of us have had very healthy pregs after

wls, probably ALOT more healthy than if we were preg and still

morbidly obese!!

I think you should get a new doctor...I would be shocked at his complete lack of

sensitivity to have the nurse call and tell you that! I know women who were

pregnant when they went through their weight loss surgery and they have had

healthy babies.

You are in the right place for support and information.

I would find a good OB and not deal with your surgeon regarding your

pregnancy again. Anyone who would tell you the things they did

should be ashamed of themselves! My surgeon told me it was okay to

get pregnant when I went in for my 1 year checkup. When I called

with questions several months later when I was pregnant, his staff

was freaked that he would have okayed it and they seemed surprised

that the baby was okay. I think there is a lot of ignorance out

there because of some problems that happened in the past with some

of the WLS procedures that had more malabsorption than the RNY.

Having WLS does not automatically make you high risk. I think that

depends on the OB. I'm 38, have had WLS, and my last pregnancy

before WLS was high-risk, but this time my doctor has not considered

me high risk.

There are many ladies who accidentally get pregnant very early after

surgery and still delivery healthy babies. The babies will take

what they need first and you get what is left. There is a lady in

my support group that got pregnant at 3 months postop. She lost 90

pounds during her pregnancy and then delivered an 8 1/2 pound baby!!

Take a deep breath and know that you are not alone!

I agree.. RUN!!!

I got pg 10 weeks out of surgery...

My new OB is 1 year out from Lap RNY herself!!

Anyhow.. the last 12 weeks have not been easy for me at all... major food

issues... just trying

to get in my vits and water and enough calories..... and lets not forget

WICKED all day M/S and

fatigue that resembles death....

I would smack anyone upside the head who even suggested that I terminate

I agree...RUN don't walk to another Dr! Find an OB who is happy for

you, knowledgable of WLS and supportive of you! My OB and my surgeon

are both thrilled and they promise to watch things closely, but are

confident that everything will be fine. They are the ones who have

been insturmental in putting my mind at ease not causing un-due

stress!

Please before you consider their advice, get 2nd and 3rd opinions.

Have ultrasounds and bloodwork done. Many...many WLS patients deliver

beautifully healthy babies...for some, it's the #1 reason that they

had WLS to begin with!

Good luck and remember that we are here for you and I'm glad you

found us!

Hi

First of all let me congratulate you on your pregnancy.

I was only 11 months post op when I found out I was

pregnant. I was scared because I was told to wait at least 18 months

before conceiving, but hey things happen right? Anyway, what my

doctor told me was that as long as my weight had stabilized (I had

been at a pleateau for 4 months) then he didn't forsee any problems.

I can tell you without a doubt that this pregnancy has been a double

blessing for me. I not only lost enough weight to get to my SECOND

goal, but I am now only 15 days away from delivering what the doctors

say is a healthy baby girl. Noone can tell you what your experience

will be. I would definitely get a second opinion if it makes you

feel more secure. But speaking from experience, don't listen to the

negativity. It can only bring anxiety, which can bring unneeded

stress. Relax and enjoy your blessing. But do make sure to get to

your ob/gyn asap, if you have'nt already. Congratulations again!!!!

And may God bless your growing family.

I am very ashamed of those Dr's that say that! e's surgeon said nothing of

that sort...she was 7-8 months out of surgery when she got pregnant...he told

her to just continue taking her vitimins and eat when she could...everything

would be fine...her OB Which we LOVE said to eat when she is hungry...Don't

stuff your self to try to get in anything you can...there was a study done...now

keep in mind this is from e's OB...there was a study done on women who

were pregnant back in the WWII Time...when Hitler invaded...he starved hundreds

of thousands of pregnant women...some did not eat their WHOLE pregnancy...well

here and there...and they did a study years later on those kids who were born to

those women and compaired that to women later in the years who had children who

kept up on their diet...hardly any difference were in the two as far as

deformaties of any sort...so that goes to show that a woman who doesn't eat her

whole preg can have a " normal " baby...so don't worry... keep taking your

prenatials, calcium chew, and protein...and drink your water!!! BIg thing! you

don't want to dehydrate...especially during the summer...this is the biggest

time to go intop premature labor because of the heat! ...eat when you can...if

your sick don't force yourself...if your hungry eat...and don't worry about

gaining weight!!! You don't have a stomach!!!! there is no way it will not come

off after you have the baby!!! HA Most of all Have fun and enjoy your

pregnancy...This will be the best time in your life...I know it is for Branndie

and I!!!

Hope this helps!!

5 weeks pregnant and surgeon says I should consider

not having this baby.

Hi all my names and Im new to this group. I was hoping someone,

anyone, could help me! Im 5 weeks pregnant and will be 1 yr post op

on May 8th. I spoke to my doctors office last week and the nurse said

that I will have to talk extra vitamins, be extra careful and will be

classified as high risk. Well I figured it will be fine. Today I got

a call from my doctors office and it was the receptionist calling to

say that the nurse spoke to the doctor ( my surgeon ) about my new

condition ( im pregnant...its not a condition ), and she was calling

cause the doctor asked her to call me and tell me that I should

consider not having this baby. They said that this baby will be born

with severe deformities and disabilities. I am so upset now, I just

keep crying...why would someone say those things! Thats just mean! Is

this true? Should a doctor be able to say that? Are there any

statistics that would show me the healthy to complication ratios? Im

sorry this is so long I just dont know what to do now. My husband and

I are very happy that im pregnant and I dont want to not have this

baby. Please help. Thank you

Hello. Let me say this - my ONE YEAR WLS ANNIVERSARY is tomorrow -

on May 6, 2004 and I'm now 18 weeks pregnant and doing just fine.

My doctor did give me the okay because I had lost most all of my

weight and am in the normal weight range - I don't know what your

situation weight-wise is but I'll also share this - there are people

on here that have gotten pregnant at 5 WEEKS after WLS and have had

VERY HEALTHY NORMAL BABIES!!!! Do not let your doctor scare you.

You can have a healthy pregnancy while still losing weight if you do

it carefully and not lose the weight too quickly. It's not easy to

get all the food it but it has been done.

I just found out I'm having a little girl - a blessing from God. I

already have a boy and have had a miscarriage in between the two. I

started my pregnancy at 165 - lost 5 lbs due to severe morning

sickness and am now at 166. I'm doing fine and the baby has checked

out healthy as well.

If you need to write to me please feel free to do so. Only you can

and should decide what is best for you.

I do see a high risk ob because of the WLS only. I'm 36 years old.

I really don't even communicate with my WL surgeon now because he

released me until my checkup in 1 year. He also told me that

PREGNANCY WASN " T HIS SPECIALITY! when I asked him questions about it

before I thought about getting pregnant. Go find a great OB and go

for it with a happy smile on your face and congrats on your new

little miracle!

Smiles,

Please DON'T listen to this Dr. Go and find yourself someone who is

competent. I was only 3 months out of surgery and on the pill when

I learned we were pregnant with this baby. We were shocked because

I was told the pill was reliable after surgery, which it is not.

Anyway, once the shock wore off and we spoke with the midwives that

delivered my last two daughters (before WLS), we were thankful to be

having this little one who obviously wants to be here. What my

midwives did was consult with a perinatologist to insure that I was

going to get the best care possible and that I may be able to ask

questions they couldn't answer since I was their first gastric

bypass patient. When I saw the pernatologist, he informed me that

he had a couple dozen WLS patients in his care and that I shouldn't

have any problems, he advised me not to exercise since I was still

in the massive weightloss faze of the surgery and that I should eat

when my body told me to, he told me to take prenatal vitamins,

calcium and an iron suppliment and not to worry about continued

weight loss because the baby would " take what it needed " from what I

had available. I lost 95lbs since surgery and have not gained any,

just stopped losing about 2 months ago. The baby is measuring close

to 9lbs on ultrasound and I'm due to deliver any day, actually, have

lost my mucus plug in the last couple of days so I know it will be

soon. You will be just fine, get a Dr. who understands the surgery

or one who is willing to learn.

Jenn, Mom of 7 1/2, Caroline 4 1/2 and Baby Emma due any

second! May 21st, I'll be 1 year post op.

Well, if your doctor is correct, then I'm really screwed. I am 10

weeks this Saturday and I was 14 weeks post-op when I conceived. (If

we do the math right, I think that makes me just over 5 months post

op right now and I will be one year post-op at the baby's birth.)

There are PLENTY of people who are having very successful and healthy

pregnancies who are post-op and pregnant too soon. We each just need

to make sure we're taking all our vitamins, eating all our food and

drinking enough. I have several girlfriends who have given birth

recently to healthy babies and were eating next to nothing for the

first four months of pregnancy, due to morning sickness and nausea.

The reality is that we have plenty of calories for energy already on

our bodies (in the form of fat) and we just need to consume the

appropriate nutrients through food and vitamins. The doctor that

made that statement is clearly ignorant.

On the flip side, I would not encourage someone to get pregnant as

early as me because there are more assurances that your pregnancy

will work as it should a year or more post-op, and I may not see the

full potential of my weight loss due to my pregnancy. But I'm

not

worried about the weight loss now because I feel that I can tackle

that after the baby is born. We're all going to do fine, even if

there are some bumps in the road, but I know any difficulties will

all be worth it in the end!

Congratulations on your pregnancy and good luck - you'll do

great!
