Guest guest
yup! I can hardly get Darbi to drink 1/4c milk a day. I waste more than I get into her. I fill her sippy cup up about an inch and she never drinks it all. She just doesn't seem to care for it. Often, I'll ask her if she wants milk and she says no, but she'll drink water. She's been that way her whole life (since she started drinking milk somewhere around 1) and I am not worried. She's gone way down on the charts for weight since she started cruising and has been between 23 and 24.5 pounds for about a year now. But growing taller every day. Her ped is not worried at all, he's great. All the calories and fat she needs she gets with breastmilk and he knows this. Forcing her to drink milk would be a huge mistake, it would never happen and both of us would be miserable. For whatever it's worth, your ped is kind of full of it... As long as she's not wasting away she's fine. I've heard other moms say their ped's say they need to wean for reasons like this... and they leave that ped and find one who knows a thing or two about nursing toddlers. I would NEVER give a nursling pediasure or force whole milk as long as the child were *on* the charts. If the child is falling into the negative percentiles... fine. Also, there's something to be said for a child who gains height but not weight. They're STILL growing!! Whether it's up or out should not matter as long as they're not shrinking! lol... Darbi is 22mo's old and I don't think she's consumed a whole gallon of milk in her whole life. I offer it to her every day and she drinks about 2cm and leaves the rest. Her oldest brother is kind of the same, except he drank a little more than she does. My middle child LOVES milk but he too didn't drink a whole lot while he was nursing. So THERE! Guest guest
, LOL LOL Sorry but feeding is our life at the moment and I just had to laugh. We see 9 different Dr's for my daughter and several of them have their finger in her eating issues. Each has a different opinion and we pick and choose what we care to deal with from each. However our Ped is our 'stabilizing force' so to speak. I always tell him what I am and am not doing from what everyone else says and he's always fine with my choices. His philosophy is that I know my child better than any Dr. could so he is very supportive. That said, milk is one of those things almost every Dr thinks kids need but - there are kids that are allergic to milk and they survive just fine. So don't let him make you feel like you aren't doing something you need to do. Some kids don't like whole milk preferring 2 % or some other like soy. Some kids don't want anything else because they like the breast best. As for the pediasure thing... cracks me up, too. What did they do before that was on the market? Kids have been just fine all these years without it. But along it comes and Dr's think it's easier for kids to get their nutritional needs met in one fell swoop and it so convenient that they " prescribe " it. You don't have to do that either. Serve your child a balanced diet, give them a chewable vitamin and keep offering whatever milk you offer. I've read several statistics on new foods but in general it seems you have to introduce a new food over 30 times before some children will begin to think they need to eat/drink it and it goes from there. If you want to see if the taste of pediasure helps, then try it. Carnation Instant Breakfast is often used in feeding circles to fortify milk adding calories and taste. You might try that cheaper option instead. Above all, if your daughter is thriving, active, full of life and laughter, don't let the Dr. get you down or cause you to change your habits or desires. (I've heard often that Drs want moms to stop bf because they want them to gain more weight... good grief!) Remember that our society is growing larger by the generation. Just a few years ago, a small child the way we all were. Now the Dr's want the babies to be heavier. My Ped says " hey, someone has to be on the 5th percentile, might as well be " . Okay, climbing off soapbox... Chris Re: Drinking Milk Problem I was wondering if anyone has a problem with their child not drinking whole milk? Guest guest
Chocolate or strawberry syrup. It adds some sugar, but the trade off of getting her to actually drink the milk more than makes up for it. It was the only way to get either of my girls to touch the stuff. Breastmilk is sweet, so cows milk doesnt tend to impress bf babies lol Angel Re: Drinking Milk Problem I was wondering if anyone has a problem with their child not drinking whole milk? Guest guest
I'm glad you laughed - my Ped does as well but some of the others just roll their eyes, give me that " We're the Professional " look making me give them the " I'm her parent " look right back. They learn to love me. It can be a bumpy road. For them. LOL 's in the 5th for weight and the 45th for height. They think she should be something like 24 lbs now according to her height. I'm happy she's just growing. Good grief! Let the kid be a kid! We aren't all cookie cutter children. We're all different. And we like it that way! Just think how annoyed the medical community would be if there were more of me? LOL LOL LOL Let her drink Mommy's milk and leave it at that. And of course I'd be happy to go along. :) Chris Re: Drinking Milk Problem > > > > I was wondering if anyone has a problem with their child not > drinking whole milk? > I took to her year checkup/shots and although her height > was good she should weigh a little more. What is this doc thinking??? I wonder if he's charting her properly. There's a WHO chart out there for breastfed children. Just search WHO breastfeeding chart and it'll show up. Plot her yourself. I bet she's just fine. I KNOW Darbi is not anywhere near the 5th percentile. That just sounds wrong that she'd need to be 26 pounds at a year old. weird! Kori Did my post in this thread ever show?? Guest guest
My 3 year old only weighs 27 pounds. She is in the 5th percentile for weight as well but only the 10th for height so she is pretty proportionate. I wouldn't worry about it as long as she eats and everything. If she were too heavy, they would flog you for that as well. I am a big believer that no one knows my children better than I do whether they have a fancy peice of paper or not. I have been given bum advice for my kids by several doctors and I do what feels right for my kids. drinks milk but she also loves the vanilla flavor soy milk that her Dad gets for himself. There is also a vanilla Quik powder that she gets occasionally. Good luck!! Guest guest
My oldest is not a good eater, so we give him Carnation instant breakfast mixed with his milk once daily. He loves the taste and gobbles down his milk. Maybe you could give that a try. He was a bf baby, but weaned himself at 7 months. He is thin but tall and my pedi says as long as he shows growth at each visit we have nothing to worry about. I firmly believe that everything is subjective and you should go with your feelings on it. My docs wants us to encourage the milk because 's appetite is so non existant. Some days he eats great and others are not so good. So we give him a 1/2 of a chewable vitamin everyday and the carnation mixed with his milk. He favors the french vanilla. Both of my brothers drink it every morning also, they are 15 and 22. They never had very good eating patterns either! frogabog frogabog@...> wrote: yup! Guest guest
I just have to say that I had the opposite " problem " with everyone - ped, WIC, etc - when my oldest DD was a toddler. She was about 25 - 30 percentile height and under 5 percentile weight by 16 mo. and they all just kept telling me not to worry that as long as her height and her weight stayed on a general upward curve it didnt matter where they fell on the chart. You know what? THEY WERE RIGHT! Caitlen is a very petite, thin girl. At 7 1/2 years she weighs 45 lbs and isnt very tall (I dont remember he actual height) and she is all bones and lean muscle. It is just the way she is made and that is that. She still drinks whole milk because she doesnt have barely any body fat and when she gets sick her body isnt very able to sustain itself, plus she figure skates and in general uses a large amount of calories, so she is better served by getting the extra calories that whole milk offers (The lazy mom's way to fatten up their kid! lol) but if she quit drinking it tomorrow I would just find a different source of caloric intake for her. Also, on a similar note, Kai is allergic to dairy, and intolerant of both soy and rice milk so he only drinks water (juice is just empty calories as far as I am concerned) and he is still a healthy boy. He is thin, but not anywhere near as skinny as my girls. In fact, he is a good half-head shorter than Arica and weight the same as her ... and she is 16 months older! When the nurse came back in she told me he was really impressed with her feet! GO DR.PONSETI!! and BL CF 12/16/
Guest guest
wrong... probably. Unless they're huge fat twins! lol... whole milk is what they're supposed to be drinking, yes. At least 2%. What's the point of giving 1% to little ones anyway? It's like water! Kori At 11:50 AM 2/4/2005, you wrote: >Speaking of milk..a friend of mine is giving her twins 1% milk! Isn't that >wrong? Guest guest
I'd say whole milk myself but I'm no expert. s. Re: Drinking Milk Problem I was wondering if anyone has a problem with their child not drinking whole milk? I took to her year checkup/shots and although her height was good she should weigh a little more. I told her ped that she eats everything and he asked about her drinking milk. I still bf her but i also give her whole mild but she wont drink more than 1 cup(if that at all). He suggested she needed AT LEAST 3 cups a day and maybe 1-2 servings of pediasure.
