Guest guest
Hi and Welcome!!!! Congratulations on your new baby coming! Yes - you can expect a small amount of waste to end up staining the upper thigh portion of the cast from time to time. Scrub it off with a wet wipe - that's about all you can do about it. But remember the casts are changed on a 5 day schedule so the dirt doesn't have time to really accumulate and become too gross. Diapering, well, you get the hang of it. As far as seats, etc., once your baby wears the DBB - you just have to find the right seat. Our swing, the tray lifted off so I could set the baby in as he wore the DBB, then snap the tray back on. Look for a high chair with the same design. They aren't too hard to find, really. Taking to boots off and on to put the baby in to some sort of seat is really a lot of work - save those seats for his/her free hours. Those free hours will come sooner than you think - and during the 3 months of 23/7 wear, the baby doesn't use such things to any degree anyhow (high chairs, jumpers, saucers) I opt for a sling as a carrier, no straps, buckles, nothing to fit between his legs. IT worked for both the casting and DBB phase. OH - two words here: SLEEP SACK! hahahah Those of us here recently have been on a rampage about sleep sacks, they're a life saver when you wear the DBB! They keep the baby comfy cozy with out a blanket to tangle in the bar, or blanket to fall off and make the baby cold at night. We hope the best for you, come back with any comments and questions, we love to have you ee, mother of two bcf boys: - NON Ponseti Method Club Foot Disaster Everett - Dr. Ponseti Success Story Due in July, learning so much here. Advice on baby gear and care... Hi, We recently learned that our baby, due in July, has a unilateral clubfoot. I am relieved to know that it is most likely correctable with Dr. Ponseti's method. I know that I am getting way ahead of myself, but I am already thinking ahead to when the baby will be here and these are just a few of the concerns that keep me up at night. How difficult is it to diaper a baby with the cast on to the hip? Is it common for any mess to end up down the cast and do you have any tips on how to avoid this? From reading some other messages, it doesn't seem like a carseat will be a problem, but what do you all use for a highchair/bouncy seat that works with the brace? Should we just plan on not using those until the baby is only wearing the brace at night? Is it possible to remove just the bar to put the baby in and out of something like a johnny jumper? It seems like taking the whole thing off and on takes quite a bit of work. Thanks for any tips/advice due July

Hey , Welcome to the list and congrats on your little one! You've come to the right place so sit back and relax because it's going to be just fine! >How difficult is it to diaper a baby with the cast on to the hip? Is >it common for any mess to end up down the cast and do you have any >tips on how to avoid this? The cast can get icky, but it can be wiped off and just leave a yellow stain lol. If you're nursing, it's obviously going to be messier than a FF baby. There's really no avoiding it. Just make sure the leg gussets (on disposable diapers - I don't recommend cloth for babies in casts if you can help it) are flat and no part of the diaper is folded under. We added a bit of cotton (comes in a roll - & first aid cotton) at the top of the cast, stuffed it inside a bit and then folded it up and over the top edge of the cast. I then taped it down with paper medical tape. This cotton was replaceable, which if it got nasty was nice. It also helped pad the sometimes sharp edge of the cast and helped with her comfort I'm sure. > From reading some other messages, it doesn't seem like a carseat will >be a problem, but what do you all use for a highchair/bouncy seat >that works with the brace? Should we just plan on not using those >until the baby is only wearing the brace at night? if you wait that long... they'll be too old for a bouncy seat or doorway jumper LOL. I like the gold non-adjustable bar for newborns because of the way it attaches to the sole plates as opposed to the red adjustable bar. It's pretty easy to just undo the nut and take one shoe off the bar with the gold fixed bar, the red adjustable is near impossible to get the shoe back on in the right spot if there's a foot in the shoe. So depending on what bar you get, it's easy or not so easy to use something that you need to put the feet though holes in. Bouncy seats are not an issue, they can only use them when they're infants anyway so go ahead and just get one you like. And if the carseat is an issue the bar is probably too long for an infant anyway. We have used a regular high chair the whole time. It's an older model that the seat comes off the bottom wodden part and becomes a table and chair. So any high chair should work just fine. > Is it possible to >remove just the bar to put the baby in and out of something like a >johnny jumper? It seems like taking the whole thing off and on takes >quite a bit of work. you can request the gold fixed bar, I suggest doing that personally. Not only to get the child into these toys, but because I think you have a better chance of getting the shoes on properly if you can put them on without the bar. At least at first. Guest guest
How difficult is it to diaper a baby with the cast on to the hip? Diaper changing isn’t that much different in the casts then with out. Is it common for any mess to end up down the cast and do you have any tips on how to avoid this? I didn’t have much problems with this but we always used toddler sized socks that went over the cast and we tucked the top of the sock into the top of the cast. From reading some other messages, it doesn't seem like a carseat will be a problem, but what do you all use for a highchair/bouncy seat that works with the brace? Just make sure you can take to tray off. Here is a website with some other tricks. http://ponseticlubfoot.freeservers.com/hints.html hth,
Guest guest
ee, Most docs are casting on the 7day schedule. I know you did 5 days but Dr. Ponseti accelerates that for his out of state patients so they can minimize the length of their stay. I think the standard is still 7 days though. Guest guest
, Welcome to the group. We had this great tape that our Dr. gave us, it is kind of cushy, a very thin foam tape that is not too sticky. This was wrapped around the top of the cast and baby's thigh to prevent messes in or on the cast. Then if the tape got messy we just pulled it off (doesn't stick a lot to baby's skin) and put on new tape. I would think that most places that do casting would have this. It only took me a couple days to get used to changing diapers w/ the cast, it was a comedy of errors the first few days, trying to figure out about diapering a boy (that little fountain got me several times) and keeping the cast out of the mess, but it gets to be a piece of cake really quickly. Like Kori mentioned, it is really easy to take the bar on and off the shoes if you have the gold bar. We have even been able to use an exersaucer with this method -- a little awkward getting down on the floor to put the screw back on but our little guy loves being in this upright position. Have you found a Doctor yet? Everyone in the group will be glad to put in their two cents to tell you about which docs are the best. Best of luck and keep us posted. > > > Hi, > > We recently learned that our baby, due in July, has a unilateral > clubfoot. Guest guest
Hi , We also had our baby in July, due on the 10th, had her on the 21st!! She also has unilateral (right). You have gotten some great advise from the mommies. You will find that if you are starting off with a Ponseti doctor, the casting really will fly by! Just enjoy your little baby and take lots of pictures, you will really want pics of that crookedy little foot later so you can remember what it looked like!! We didn't take enough, her cf was a suprise to say the least and I wish we had taken tons more photos!!! It's great you have found this site, it will be a such a wonderful source of information and support for you! Congratulations on your pregnancy, take good care! & Grace 07-21-04 Right unilateral cf FAB 16/7 > > > Hi, > > We recently learned that our baby, due in July, has a unilateral > clubfoot. Guest guest
Hi- My baby is due in June and I was about to order a bunch of cloth diapers...why do you not recommend cloth diapers for use with the casts? Too messy? Or is it just the flat prefold diapers don't hold the mess well enough? Would fitted diapers make a difference? Sorry, I'm just a cloth fanatic... > baby. There's really no avoiding it. Guest guest
I've never used cloth diapers, but I would think they wouldn't work very well with the casts. Sometimes I even had a problem with some of the supreme diapers. They had a more cloth like cover and overnight they seemed that they would allow more wetness to get to the cast area. But this was over three years ago so I'm really having to reach back into the memory banks!
