Guest guest
lol June, boy do you have GUTS! I have often thought of this, but didn't want to *say it*. Oh my... well... Guest guest
You know, I've often though about it. So many of the Ponseti trained doctors here still do their own thing! I've contacted doctor Ponseti about 5 times, and I have a well trained and highly recommended doctor. Guest guest
What we have to rely on is that he's training his predecesors and they're listening. I know my doctors will call him and one of his co-horts in Iowa whenever they have a question. I think the biggest issue is that doctors are being trained but they're not listening and go on to tweak the method or don't follow protocol and thus we have relaspe or feet that are in casts forever. It's scary for sure. I can't tell you how many times I've written Oprah but it seems today she's more interested in movie stars - It pisses me off. She used to be such the humanitarian on her show. Oh well, it's her show. I guess I'll just have to start my own talk show! Does the camera really add 10pds? Kearns linda07033@...> wrote: You know, I've often though about it. Guest guest
I've given though to the loss of our beloved Dr. POnseti also. It will be a tragic day in the medical field - and I doubt Iowa City is prepared for the amount of mourners who will attend his funeral. s. Re: BIG issue! You know, I've often though about it. Guest guest
I have thought about this as well. Kori, you may not have *said* it but you have alluded it in other posts, just none of us have had the guts to really talk about it. I know he is totally dedicated to helping our children (obviously as this has been his life's work), but I sometimes wonder (tell me if you think I am wrong) if we expect too much from him; I mean we send everyone w/ a question about their children's feet to him for advice. He must be deluged by email! I wonder if we shouldn't be focusing our efforts on our own Docs (especially those that work at teaching hospitals), to make sure they are following the method properly and training others, and on getting the word out to get those non-ponseti docs trained. Children's Hospital here in St. Louis is affiliated w/ Washington University School of Medicine, whereby Residents in Pediatric Orthopedics can train w/ Dr. Dobbs, but what about all the doctors training at 's Hopkins or Harvard Medical School, etc? Is there a Ponseti doc training them?? There has to be someone, if not Oprah, maybe someone else, who could bring this to the forefront of public knowledge and get the word out. I STILL do not understand how any Dr. who understands the Ponseti method could think that surgery is a better way to go or that Ponseti " doesn't work " . Okay, sorry for rambling on like that, I think I got a little carried away. I'm just SO into getting this information out to people! > > > >Hey everyone! > > > >Thought I'd bring this up now, I've thought of it often, and since > >I've joined this group it seems to become more of a concern of mine, > >and maybe yours too... > > > >What is going to happen when Dr. Ponseti stops practicing. Guest guest
I think we all think about this. In one of the baby books I've made for Zach I wrote something about giving Dr. Ponseti " longevity pills " . Like all of you, I consider Dr. Ponseti to be an angel of sorts - I have yet to encounter a doctor who is as dedicated (truly so) as Dr. Ponseti. I'm always in awe when I call him (or he calls me back!!!!) and he talks with me as if he has nothing else to do but listen to my concerns and help. Having said all that - I think it's a serious concern - what will happen when Dr. Ponseti is no longer with us. It's one I'd rather not think about - but should... You mentioned contacting Oprah or Dateline. This was big on the board a few months back (maybe it was this summer?). Many people emailed Oprah from our list, there is a letter (or at least used to be, I haven't checked lately) in the files section that can be used to send to the Media. I've emailed Oprah myself (a couple of times actually) and I know 's wife sent a wonderful letter to her as well. Although this topic has been discussed over and over again - I'm always glad when I see it come up again. That's what's needed to keep us motivated to get the word out there - you know what they say about the squeaky wheel? We've got to keep on squeakin! Thanks for bringing this topic up - as I will pull out our clubfoot story, dust it off, tweak it and send it AGAIN!! Guest guest
In my opinion it comes from a couple factors: One is the parents not using the DBB correctly either because the dr. informed them wrong or they decided not to, decided it wasn't as necessary as they say - so a relapse happens proving Ponseti's method is risky. OR else the doctor thinks it's nuts to make a kid wear it that many years so they slack off prescribing it. The parents have trouble with it and the dr. does't know how to coach them to it's proper use. I think the DBB is a big culprit. The other thing is these doctors who find Ponseti's method so *simple* certainly their own ego can improve up on it, thus they change it with bad results, again proving the method doesn't work. Well, Ponseti's method works, but their variation of it doesn't but they won't admit that, they just say HIS method sucks. And then there are doctors who might truely want to use it, so they go learn it, but then left to their own devices with no one to watch over them - they fail to do it correctly, again, the results are bad. The baby's foot bones are so tedious to work with, it's not a matter of yanking the foot in to a position, it's aligning all those teeny tiny bones exactly. Anyway, I think those are the factors that are keeping Ponseti's work from being recognized fully. s. I STILL do not understand how any Dr. who understands the Ponseti method could think that surgery is a better way to go or that Ponseti " doesn't work " . Guest guest
Holly- If you could send that letter to me I'd be glad to also tweek it to fit our story and send it to those who might help us get this word out. Thanks. I'm glad I started the ball rolling again. It's funny to see news programs talking about " serious " childhood conditions but deny or forget the fact that even " minor " things like clubfoot can become serious if not treated properly. Guest guest
June, This thought has crossed my mind many times (and brings tears each time). Bless the man for still working at 90! I partially think he may wonder what will happen to our babes if he retires. I hope all of our doctors and the others in Iowa will step up and do the right thing. Tweeking his method benefits noone. I think we just have to be here for others and guide them in the right direction. Hopefully we will get more Dobbs and Herzenbergs out there. Guest guest
June you know i wonder the same thing. that is why i was so determined to have my daughter seen by him in december. I asked him how often he worked and he told me he was retired. of course i did not know this and i asked him for how long? he told me he has been retired for 20years! can you believe that! so nosy me asks why he is still doing this( thank god he still is!) and he looks at me and says " This is my life helping children with club feet. It is something very soothing for me to work on their feet. I also love to meet the wonderful parents of club foot children. " I just wanted to give him a hug! That man is so wonderful. Im so glad that we got the chance to meet him and have our daughter treated by him. he is so dedicated to his work and his " club foot babies " that you just cant help but notice. Now a days you hardly ever see that. Although his age he seems to be in good health and he has such a goood memory. WoW! Just thought i would share my experience with you and also wonder what will happen. I sure do hope more word gets around about his method! and BL CF 12/16/03 > > Hey everyone! > > Thought I'd bring this up now, I've thought of it often, and since > I've joined this group it seems to become more of a concern of mine, > and maybe yours too... > > What is going to happen when Dr. Ponseti stops practicing. Guest guest
- It's funny you mention getting the chance to meet him and have him work with your daughter. Shane was treated by a doctor here in San Diego, but in August 2002 (when Shane was born) Dr. Ponseti was here for a medical conference and actually came to our Children's Hospital Clubfoot Clinic and treated all of the children that day. He took time to look at eveyone of them, talk to the parents, cast the little ones and teach all the doctors who had come to watch him at the same time. I'm so glad also that I had that chance...I'm even more glad I always took a camera to all of Shane's castings to get pictures of his feet after each cast, because I was able to get pictures of Dr. P working on him that day. I surely will treasure them. i made a scrapbook specifically about Shane's foot and casting and the pictures are there to be preserved for a lifetime. We live in Texas and he told us that there were not ponseti trained dr.s in our state(very depressing) or any dr. in texas that he would recommend treating her so I thought " if we are going to make the trip to another state to get her treated might as well be with the best! Guest guest
You all know went through bad treatment before we found Dr. Ponseti, but the day I met Dr. Ponseti (not knowing yet his legacy) I was in awe. I mean he called me at home and said " Come to Iowa " and I didn't even question it. It just WAS. So I went. Simply, totally in awe. A peace and a feeling of trust washed over me and he said " Oh do not cry, if you cry I will cry then my nurse will cry and your mom will cry. " He was so loving to my baby. When Everett was born we didn't think twice, we drove to Iowa. My dh hadn't met Dr. Ponseti before but when he did he too was just speechless. You feel the hand of God at work. Not to get back in to that whole religious conversation again - but I cannot find any other explanation for a man 90 years old to be in perfect health of body and mind still working every day and to still demonstrate so much love for both his work and his children. s.
