Guest guest
How did I decide? LOL OH man that's a big question! Let me first start by saying the decision to homeschool is happening largely because of the behavior, attitudes and values that seem to be so absent from school as the children grow older. Not that it didn't exist in K and the lower elementaries but man it just gets worse and worse. There are some academic issues as well that are related to how the district thinks kids who are in 5/6 and jr high should learn, but I must admit that the majority of our pros for doing it come from the social, moral side of the coin. My father was a Pastor and we saw many kids homeschooled for that reason. We also started and ran for many years a Christian school at our church. We supported several homeschoolers in our community providing text books and social opportunities for them so it's been a part of my knowledge base for a long time. Deciding what curriculum to use is not easy but it really can be. I know too much so I struggled. However, you just find a company (by searching on the web of course under homeschool curriculum or by looking for homeschool groups that review them) that has the same philosophy about education that you do and you go from there. If homeschooling is prominent in your community, there is most likely used curriculum available there as well as on ebay and other homeschool networks. Of course you can also subscribe online like we'll be doing. I think that most homeschoolers opt for enrichment activities around their community - often cost free - and I think that's a good idea. Based on your child(ren's) interests, you can increase the learning opportunities easily since scheduling is up to you. I honestly think you have to go by trial and error unless another homeschooling family will share their experiences with you. I'd advise you to sign up for a homeschooling group or two online. You can learn a lot from them. I will say that we live on one income as well. It isn't easy but thankfully we are just fine. If you want to do it, there are ways that don't cost as much. It is doable more cheaply than some think and yet you can't scrimp on your child's education so it does cost something. Initially there is a LOT of things free online but as you get past K and 1st, you MUST buy something to follow. Chris Re: Homeschooling/Chris Hi Thanks for the input Let me ask your opinion on the cost of homeschooling?? That is honestly one of my holdbacks. We pretty much live paycheck to paycheck now on a single teacher's salary. I have been told by a few of my friends that homeschooling is actual a bit costly. I have not done a whole lot of research since I am on the fence about it. I sometimes really think that maybe some of the problems with my son's mouth and behavior are encouraged/influenced by what he sees in school. We have a very strong and active homeschool community where I live but since there are SO many curriculums out there, I can't get anyone to really answer my questions. How did you decide?
