Guest guest
, your describing the same side-effects that I experienced with both the l-carnitor and the Q10. Needless to say, I don't take them anymore. Make sure you mention all of it to the neuro. Good luck, Bug
Guest guest
Sounds like you started Carnitor and Q10 at the same time? Personally, I have learned the hard way never to start two substances, whether rx drugs or OTC supplements, at the same time. Too difficult to sort out cause and effect, either positive or negative responses. I have a very positive response to Carnitor (though some GI side effects) but a very negative response to Q10. If I had started them together, I have no idea what we would have concluded. It's interesting to me that many doctors and even mito experts will start patients on multiple treatments simultaneously. If anyone ever suggests this to me, I always ask if we can try them one by one. Usually I need at least a month or longer on each new treatment to assess effects before adding anything else. Just my experience. YMMV. Barbara > lcarnitne > > I just started taking coenzyme q10 and l-carnitne. I am having > abdominal pain and nausea, vomiting and some diarrhea. Guest guest
PS. You may also need to start at a very low dose and gradually work up. I started Q10 at 30 mg once a day and increased very gradually over weeks. Similar strategy for Carnitor. Start low and go slow is the mantra of my PCP! Kinder, gentler is what I tell the bolder ones. None of this hit 'em hard stuff please! My body does not appreciate. Barbara > lcarnitne > > > > I just started taking coenzyme q10 and l-carnitne. Guest guest
, Just wanted to let you know that I also experienced abdominal pains with the L-carnitine (tablets). I switched to the liquid form and eliminated the problem. You may want to try different forms to see if that works for you. Maggie > I just started taking coenzyme q10 and l-carnitne. Guest guest
I had neurological side effects from both CoQ10 and Carnitor. I started on one tablet or capsule for each, but it was still enough to give me problems. I don't take either of them now. I usually wait at least a week between starting new things, unless I'm absolutely sure they won't interact. I also try to take things at different times to make sure mixing in my stomach isn't causing problems. One thing I tell my dad is that EACH pill should be diluted with a glass of water, so always make sure that you drink lots of water if taking more than one pill at a time. At one point he was taking 10 different pills at one time, several of which noted " take with a full glass of water " . This might sound ridiculous to those who take many, many pills, but the chemistry of it is still there - you're going to have an upset stomach if you take too many things at once, especially if you don't drink enough water with them. I have one multi-vitamin that I can't take on an empty stomach (even though they say to), so I have to take it in the middle of a meal. Even so it still bothers me sometimes, but only for an hour or two. Another alternative is to mix the powder from the capsule in juice or water, or use a liquid and mix that into water or juice. Take care, RH > PS. You may also need to start at a very low dose and gradually work up. I > started Q10 at 30 mg once a day and increased very gradually over weeks. > Similar strategy for Carnitor. Guest guest
I also had problems taking Q10. I have not tried the other. Thinking about you. Guest guest
I can't agree more. All my supplements I have started out a low dose for at least a week before upping it a little for another week, etc until I get up to the dosage prescribed. Even then, it may take a few weeks on the prescribed dose to have side effects even themselves out. We do NOT react to any meds the way a person without mito does, and most docs don't realize it either. Another thing to mention is that the OTC l-carnitine may be giving you more trouble because there are no dosage and purity standards from one batch to another or possibly even one pill to another. You may want to ask your doc about the rx Carnitor. Side note, we took DAW Carnitor with no problems for years and when the generic came out the insurance company switched us to the generic. Because fillers etc can be different in a generic, some don't do as well with the generic as the DAW. We had to switch back to the DAW because my daughter had gastric problems and I had cardiac problems on the generic. Just a few things to consider. I'm not a doc, this is just my own and my daughter's personal experiences. Barbara Seaman wrote: >PS. You may also need to start at a very low dose and gradually work up. Guest guest
and Maggie I get stomach pain or heartburn after taking the Carnitor, but take a small piece of ginger and it takes care of it. Of course, my GI system is not sensitive like some of you. laurie > , > > Just wanted to let you know that I also experienced abdominal pains > with the L-carnitine (tablets). Guest guest
, When I switched from the carnitor tablets to the liquid carnitor I got diahrea very badly. I was only taking the 1000 mg also but had to cut that in 1/4 and then work up. Also, one kind of lcarnitine I bought at the health store caused alot of stomach pain. I also read on web md or walgreens website or something to make sure you are taking lcarnitine I think it is, a different one can actually cause defiencies. I could not tolerate the carnitor tablets--something in them besides being big and chalky did not agree with me. I take the liquid now and my son may be taking the carnitine gels in addition to his qgel now as he does not like the taste of Carnitor. I found that the qgel works best for me and does not upset my stomach. I take the small 30 mg gels now because easier to swallow but my son still takes the larger 60 mg gels. It also comes in a liquid and if I am not mistaken chewables. You may want to try different products (liquid, gels, chewables) and brands as there may be something in one of them that does not agree with you. Also, many recommend starting only one new thing at a time. But, supposedly carnitine and coQ10 work best together I have heard from many on this list. Janet Sample lcarnitne I just started taking coenzyme q10 and l-carnitne. I am having abdominal pain and nausea, vomiting and some diarrhea. I know my neuro said the lcarnitne may caues gastritis or diarrhea. I am wondering if I should continue or not. I have an appt today with my neuro - just wanted to know if any of you have had problems with this. I have been on it for about a week.I am tking 1 gm of the carnitine and am supposed to increase it to 1 gm three times a day and am taking 100 mg of the coenzyme q10 three times a day. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Medical advice, information, opinions, data and statements contained herein are not necessarily those of the list moderators.
