Guest guest
Jodi R. I may be able to shed a little more light onto the ketone situation since we have been dealing w/ it frequently here at our house. As someone posted, you spill ketones before your blood sugar drops. It doesn't take long for my 3 year old son, Christian, to spill ketones when he's sick. This is usually the only time we check them. (Which, so far this winter, has been at least once a week.) You can purchase the ketones at any pharmacy. They're always behind the desk, so you'll have to ask the pharmacist for them. Here they cost between $9-11. I believe they come in packages of 24 or 50. just helped me clear up a misconception that I had. (, help me if I explain this incorrectly.) That, although the blood sugar levels and the ketones are linked, if your child is spilling ketones, he/she needs to be given complex carbohydrates (pastas, breads, etc. think anti-atkins). Just popsicles or suckers or the like aren't going to do the trick. The child also needs to keep down these complex carbs. When your body starts to spill ketones it means it's burning fat. As you know, our children don't have much fat. If the body cannot find more fat to burn, it will start burning muscle. The biggest muscle in the body is the brain. So you see where the concern is. Giving them complex carbs (and having them be able to keep them down) gives the body something to burn beside the muscle. If your childs ketones come out anything above moderate, call the dr. and get he/she to the ER. Sorry if this ran long. I wanted to make sure I was explaining it correctly. mom to ,6, (non-RSS) and Christian,3, (RSS)
Guest guest
I don't know much about ketones medically but you can buy ketone strips at your local pharmacy. Put them in the diaper or put a cotton ball into the diaper and drip the urine onto a stick. They l measure if you're 'spilling ketones' which means blood sugar is low or is going to be low or has been low? Please somebody more educated bail me out here! Guest guest
Just to add to 's post, in the longrun you want to get complex carbs into your child who is spilling ketones, but the short term treatment is different. You have to get GLUCOSE into your child first. This can be done with Gatorade, ginger ale, glucose gel, popsicles, etc. When Max spills ketones, the first thing we do is get him to sip on ginger ale or Gatorade. This gets the needed glucose into him as well as some hydration. If he cannot or will not drink, then we use the g or j tube. For those of you with babies, watering the formula down with pedialyte or water is fine. Usually you start with a half and half mix. After your child is hydrated and has the additional glucose, then you can aim for the carbohydrates. If, however, there is too much vomiting and your child looks dry and there are still ketones, then it is time for the IV with 10% dextrose. Jodi Z.
