Guest guest
in 13 years of ER nursing, I've seen MANY MANY kids come in that has swallowed a coin and twice as many phone calls about it. The only thing that the ER does is xray to see that there is actually a coin there. Then (of course, as long as nothing is obstructed or an airway compromise) the parents are sent home with gloves to squish through the stools until the coin passes on its own. Rarely, have any gone on to need referral to a surgeon b/c it didn't pass on its own. Although scary, it's not classified as a problem (and I've seen every kind of coin imaginable swallowed- even a rare penny from a great- grandfathers coin collection- lol) unless one of the above happens- it causes obstruction or airway compromise. just keep the kids away from Great Grandpap's coin collection! lol Sheila
