If you don't want to take the GTT and don't feel it's best for you...then you don't NEED a reason, you don't NEED to convince them of anything...all you have to do is say, " Nope...but thanks. " As for the glucose...typical Glucola contains 50 grams of sugar. Classic Coke (and pepsi) have about 40 grams in it...so it's different, but not that different. > Also...is there printed info somewhere...or on the net that i can > print out for them that states 1) what can happen if I drink this > stuff and 2) how the results would be inaccurate for them. People who had the LapBand, for instance, will have no different reaction than anyone who hasn't had WLS. Someone who had a DS will have a totally different reaction (no dumping) than someone who had a RNY (who will typically dump and have totally inaccurate results). It really varies... Guest guest
Sydney do a search for alverado weight loss clinic -- the surgeons there have posted information about pregnancy in general and this test specifically! The test is not accurate and can actually make you very ill. As far as your OBs -- they CANNOT legally force you to take this -- or any -- test. Tell them to back off and respect your wishes as a patient. mailto: dferguson@... BTC, Columbus, 10/7/98 HELP...doctor is trying to force me to take glucose test! > Hi. I'm 27 weeks pregnant with my fourth son...but he's first after gastric bypass surgery. > > I've gone round and round with my OB's (it's a practice of about three or four OB's) and again TODAY I've been asked WHY I refuse to take the Glucose test. I explain that 1) it will make me feel VERY ill and 2) the results may be inaccurate for me. Today the OB said he's had two other Gastric Bypass patients who TOOK the test and they had NO problems and their results were FINE. > > I am NOT taking the test...but would like some information to hand over to this practice so they can understand WHY. And for future patients who go to their clinic (I love the office otherwise) so they won't have to keep going through what I am. > > I'm looking for info such as how much glucose is in the glucose drink and what it is compaired to. Guest guest
Sydney, I did the test, I felt badly from the 2nd swallow, but the nice ladies at the lab put me in a recliner in a dark room and I fought the urge to throw it back up for the whole hour. If I had been sitting up it would have been all over. I would have prefered to test my blood sugar with a machine for the remainder of my pregnancy than to do it again. I lived through it, but I wonder how accurate it really was. Good luck, Jenn
Guest guest
Thanks to all of you ladies who responded to me about the Glucose test. I'm sure I'll NOT be doing it. And my husband just keeps telling me just to say " NO " . Flat out. I feel like I have to keep explaining myself. So, I'll take a bit of info in that I did end up finding on the web (thanks ladies) and I'll tell them I am willing to fast and do the test or even poke myself at home over and over. But no Glucola for me. Hate the stuff anyway...but hate the feeling I'll feel from drinking it a WHOLE lot more! Again...thanks to all. Guest guest
hi. My OB made me take a fasting test - where they drew blood to check my sugars w/o the drink... I explained to her that i would have the equivalent to a diabetic moment for the first hour then my sugars would stablize. She made me take it 3 times! (one day i ate pancakes w/ syrup and passed sugar in my urine - oops!) anyway... tell your ob to take another route for the testing... he can't force you to go to the lab... Guest guest
I have no respect for doctors who think they are GOD. First of all, let him write up anything he wants. That doesn't mean you have to show up for the test. What's he going to do? Physically drag your there??? I don't think so. Is this the only doctor in town??? He certainly acts like he is!!! And since I would bet he is not the only doctor in town, remember, you are paying him, he is your employee. You can take your business elsewhere. Personally, I had an OB for the first pregnancy, Pre-WLS, and for this one, I was immediately told I could have a midwife if I wanted. I am so glad, as they are much more laid back, and less adversarial. I was asked in my first visit, if I wanted to breast feed. I told her I was not interested, and the question never went further. I was expecting to be lectured on it being the best for my child, and I should call La Leche, but instead, she pointed out how much the formulas have improved since I last used formula!!! I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least. My point is, if you don't like what you're getting with this doctor, go someplace else. This is your baby, not theirs. If there was an issue with sugar right now, they would know it from the urine test they take at every doctor's visit. Personally, it sounds more like an ego trip to me, on the doctor's part. I will probably be doing a comparison of fasting blood sugar levels, and what the levels are two hours after I eat breakfast. I think that seems much more realistic anyway. Anyway, best of luck to you, and don't let them push you around. in Western MA 323/155/back up to 169 at 4 months pregnant April 10, 2002, Open RNY Due 9/23/04 with #2, Mommy to Caleb since 11/27/00, wife to Ray since 9/28/96.
