Guest guest
Hi ! My son was on this medication from 8 months to approx. 1 yrs. old (he is now 11 yrs.) He had severe reflux that affected his vagus nerve and he was also very tiny. Before taking the medication he would have symptoms similar to seizures where he would space out, cluck his tongue, his temp. would spike really high and then sleep for hours. This happened several times a day. Once he had the medication they disappeared and he was able to gain weight much more quickly - only we had to keep adjusting the medication as his weight went up (or he would have more of these episodes). It did work fairly quickly though. My best to your friend. p.s. we also used an antacid to help with severe heartburn at the same time. Guest guest
, Yes we have used Reaglan before my son had his surgery for reflux. He was 2 months old when they started him on it. It is a motility drug designed to move the contents of your stomach through the system quicker so there isn't a lot/or anything in the stomach to vomit up. I have to say our experience with Reaglan was not good.My sons " side effects " did exit after he stopped using it and did not return. If you run a search on it on the web, you will come up with some pretty informative info. My son was taken off it at 4 months and put on propulsid, they no longer use propulsid so I am not sure what otehr motility drug they would use. Good Luck and tell your friend if there is no other option available for her child and she MUST use it, proceed with caution. Debbie > I have a friend whose son was just prescribed Raglan for reflux. Guest guest
Zantac and Raeglan are two different medications that serve two different purposes. Zantac is an acid reducer, Raeglan is a motility drug. Motility drugs are commonly used with acid reducers when reflux is involved because they are trying to move the stomach contents through the system quick and the zantac is used to reduce any acidity left over in the stomach and esophageus areas. It doesn't surprise me that your child did so bad, so did mine with friethening side effects. All in all, Reaglan is a no-go in our house!! Guest guest
My son was on Reglan from age 5-15 months. I did not know that one of the side affects of this medicine is movement disorder or tardive dyskinesia. He now has this disorder and we attribute it to the prolonged use of this medicine. I do not recommend this medicine for anyone, never mind a young child. JMO. While on this med he did have visible side affects such as hyperactivity but it wasn't until after the discontinuation of the med that the movement disorder occurred. I should also add that another medicine that he was on (Tannate antihistimine/decongestant for ear fluid) also is linked to this kind of disorder, so it's possible that either or the combination of the two caused my son's disorder. Regardless of which, this med has serious side affects that should be made known to parents before this is prescribed. There is much written about this connection but feel free to let me know if you need more info. Dawn > I have a friend whose son was just prescribed Raglan for reflux. Has anyone ever used this? Guest guest
Sorry, I just wanted to ask what your friend's baby is on for milk...breastfed, formula, if formula which? I recommend that doctors/parents look seriously into food intolerance/allergy as a possibility with a professional like a nutritionist BEFORE medicating as doctors so quickly tend to do. We used Nutramigen formula for my son. It apparently tastes terrible but is much easier on their little tummies. Feel free to email me if you like. Reglan is basically an anti nausea drug. It is considered safe for newborns. I know this because......I used Reglan to attempt to increase my breastmilk. I never made any milk til the 8th or 9th day. It was awful. Anyway, I did some research on the net and found medical research studies published in the Lancet and others to support the basis that as a side effect of Reglan it increases prolactin and therefore breastmilk. My ob told me that if I got him the medical journal published he would prescribe for me. These studies showed no ill effects to the newborns due to the mother using Reglan to increase milk production. Hope that helps alittle.
