Those are kind of interesting. I have no idea where to get them and so

far, no one has shown up since I've been here saying they have them. If

you look closely, they're set up like a reverse last shoe (pointed to the

outside) and Bens feet... at least in these pictures do not look fully

corrected (not to mention the deep lateral crease that may indicate

possible atypical). They look a little stiff to me actually, and I wonder

how they hold the heel down well with such a high stiff looking ankle

strap. Interesting, to say the least.

There are a lot of really old photos hanging around, people most of us who

are active here right now don't know (maybe Theresa knows?). And it

doesn't say who posted the pics so you can't email the parents. The dates

on these say Jan 24th 2005 but they've been there as long as I've been a

member and the photos section went from over quota to 11mb recently so I

think some moderator finagling happened recently so we could get in

again. I too am curious about these shoes and how his feet are doing today.

Kind of what I was thinking, about his foot possibly being atypical.

I'm working on some feedback to send to Dr. Dobbs about his brace and

AFO's based on everyone's comments and I just thought these were

interesting. Something he might want to see while he is developing

the AFO/shoe to go on his brace. I just wondered if something like

this might solve some of the AFO issues (such as the sweating) and if

it could be done shorter so as not to hold the ankle so stiffly.

Have you ever seen the photos in the files section of tennis shoes

mounted to the bar?

I just noticed in the close up photos that there is an inside strap

that goes across the instep, it looks like maybe this is the one that

would be tight to hold the heel down.

ahhh! That's where the black strap went! I didn't notice it went

underneath. Interesting!

yeah, those are the ones that have this clamp like thingie instead of a

sole plate and theoretically you can put any shoe on them. I think Leah

(Rob & ) wears tennies on her DBB with this clamp thing but it's

about perfect for the sole of the Markell shoes so those are used a lot

too. I'm not convinced tennies would hold the foot properly myself. I'm

still good with the Markells. I like the strap, I am certain her foot

isn't moving inside the shoe and it fits her foot nicely. I think Dr.

Dobbs should really look into the s with his brace and forget the

AFO's - they just don't seem practical especially considering the

cost. I'm also not convinced the Markell's are bad shoes for most feet. I

think they're good shoes and user error/uncorrected feet are the biggest

problems with them. If parents knew exactly how to put the shoes on

properly in the first place and the docs would do their job properly we'd

see a lot less problems with them. How many parents here have tried the

tips with a fully corrected foot and still had problems? (without sores

already present of course) So far, no one that I know of has come back

here and said they did everything right, had a hole to check and the heel

was down and STILL had problems. With the new tiny shoes Markell has

available with a hole in the back, it seems like there wouldn't be any

problems (assuming parents didn't ignore that the heel wasn't seated

properly). I'd like to know how these new shoes are doing with the little

ones, seems most docs aren't even aware they're available and there's no

information on the website about them either. Love to have some pics of a

pair to put up on the CFPics website at least. If anyone has some, send me

a pic!

I think these shoes " Bebax " are used for mettatarsus adductus etc...

If you attach the " Bebax " to a bar you have another type of brace

(Lion Brace)... but when the foot is full corrected this type of shoe

is not necessary.

So the pictures of Ben's feet obviously uncorrected were being treated with

the Bebax shoe with a bar to achieve full correction? I noticed that there

was one picture where the foot looked more corrected. I wonder if it

worked? Are MTA children being treated with this Bebax shoe with a bar or

is the shoe alone enough?

Well, it seems we're back to the idea that what we have to choose from are

Markell's, 's, AFO's, or tennis shoes clamped onto the bar. hummmm...

I think Bebax shoes with a bar don´t work to achieve full

correction... (in clubfoot)...

For MTA children the shoe alone is enough...In more severe cases it

can be easily corrected with two to three plaster-cast applications...

Kori,

I sent some info to my ortho the other day and made the comment that Dr. Dobbs

and his new bar connected to 's shoes would be wonderful. Funny that you

thought of that, too. LOL

Wow, I didn't even know that Markell had these available! What sizes

do they come in? It may be worthwhile to mention to my doctor when

we go in for our next check-up!

Thanks,

Dear Group

I apologise for not replying any sooner to the original post

requesting information on the `different' boots that I had posted

along with Ben's pictures.

The boots were used by our consultant at the very beginning of Ben's

treatment under the Ponseti method. Ben (19/11/01) was originally

seen by a non-qualified doctor and I believe that the manipulation

at the beginning did more harm than good.

We took Ben to see Gavin P. de Kiewiet after approximately 9 casts.

Ben's foot was then manipulated, cast and the tenotomy performed.

The correction achieved was not as complete as we had expected or

hoped at the time. The foot was still very stiff and a fairly

obvious crease was present. Ben's first boots were those shown in

the files section. This caused us some worry because they were not

the markell shoes that we were hearing about from this web site,

however, the advantage with the shoes Ben had was the ability to

adjust the forefoot section of the shoe to fit Ben's small, stiff

foot. This might have helped to keep the heel blisters to a

minimum.

We had some horror stories with blisters from the straps and if you

look at the pictures the ankle strap is a thick black leather band,

the thick leather band was actually a piece of a leather skirt.

Point being, I haven't heard any stories of the initial stages being

easy.

Ben had these shoes for some time and then moved on to the Markell

boots and bar which he still wears at night (14hrs).

Ben is 3 years old past November and is amazing, his feet look

fantastic he can run, jump, hop and balance better than his Mum

(second child due in 6 weeks, no sign of talipes from the scans).

I will post some pictures of Ben's feet for all to see. Ben has

never missed a day without his boots and bar and will continue until

4 1/2 or thereabouts. We will follow our consultants view and the

views from this site.

Starting to ramble a bit. I think the point I wanted to make is that

at the beginning when your child starts with the treatment you find

it difficult to see the way forward. All the differences you pick up

in the different stories on the web site can scare you especially if

the treatment is going exactly as expected. You can see form the

pictures that Bens foot was not typical at the early stages,

however, he is perfect now and I would not change a single thing

about the whole experience.

Thanks so much for your response. Glad to hear that Ben is doing so

well these days. It is nice to hear about the older kids who are

doing great.
