Ann-MArie

HI!!!I have an allergy to sulfa too. If you are allergic to sulfa you are

usually allergic to sulfur, sulfites. According to my PCP sulfate is ok. SO

i get Magnesium sulfate in my TPN--- so far ok. BE careful and double check

everything.

THis is really IMPORTANT--We only learned this after my skin starting buring

off last year and my hair started falling out.... So READ ALL LABELS - the

only TPN Amino acid formulas on the market that are sulfite free are Travasol

nd possisbly a new one called Clinacin (but not a 100% sure on that one) both

are by Baxter. Do NOT use Freamine, Novamine, or anything else--these all

have sulfite in it. It is really importnatn to have them double checkcif you

are getting MVIs and Vit C-- as most Vit C incldes sulfites as a

preservative. Thus I no longer get Vit C in TPN-- Supposedly ther is not VIt

C for TPN onthe market that is sulftie free.

As for the MVI-- had a HUGE problem during this past hosptial stay with

this--never new it till my last day of my 9 week stay when i personally

figured it out. The inpatient pharmancy was giving me whatever brand of MVI

they wanted- turned out that were giving me MVIs with sulfites in it. 9 i

was on high dose stearids to reat teh SLEs for part of the stay so it was

maaskign the reaction until they got me off hte steriods- then i had the

sever reaction very quickly). I use a brand called AAIpharma Adult MVI that

is sulfite free (I think this is the only one onthe market.)

You need to ceck what type of magnesium your getting and potasiusm and

anything else. IF it has the word- sulfite in the name-- they need to get rid

of it IMMEDIATELY. Please look into the sulfate further. Like i said for me,

I am ok with sulfate. I would first check to see if there could be sulfites

or sulfur as preservatives in any of your TPN formula (IIT may not be in the

name-- you really need to talk to the infusion pharmacist and havve him/her

go thru each ingredient with a fine tooth comb). If that'sok, then I woudl ?

whether you do have a problem with sulfates too?

Plaese eamil me privately or call me if you have any more questions. I have

been thru soem pretty bad expereienes with this allergy. Yesterday I saw an

my eye surgeon bc i lost my vision while inpatient this summer. Within

24hrs of getting home and getting on my corect TPN formula--vision is fine,

hauir not falling out, swallowing is back, etc. Turns out it was a severe

reation to sulfites/sulfa in my MVI. UGH!!!!

I hope that helps. I have only learned this from my own research.

Talk to you soon
