Life should be *different* but not miserable with the DBB.....sounds like your

baby is having a lot of trouble wearing it. Is that the case? Can you describe

to us more about what is going on that is making life so miserable? Perhaps we

have some suggestions that will help make it better.

I agree with the doctor about not changing the brace, but I bet we can pull

together here and figure out what is causing your trouble and find a solution.

the shoes!

My son was born with club foot and we have gone through the

whole poseti method down to the dennis brown bar brace. Life has been

so miserable since and I have done some research and found a brace

called the Wheaton brace that just goes on the one leg. My Dr refuses

to try it because it is so new and I just dont know what to do. ANy

advice ??

What is the Wheaton Brace? It sounds familiar. Is it similar to an

AFO/KAFO? I do recommend sticking with the DBB because that is the true

Ponseti protocol. If you are having trouble with the shoes, there could

be several reasons. You can check the archives for the DBB pointers and

check list. This will give you an idea if the shoes are on properly. Your

baby could be in pain if the shoes are not on properly hence making your

lives miserable.

There will be many giving great advice. Hang in there!!!

Oh, by the way, welcome to the board!

I am not totally familiar w/ the Wheaton brace, although I have heard

of it; I think it is a type of AFO. The main issue w/ the AFO or any

single leg style brace is that you can't maintain that outward

rotation that is necessary to keep the foot corrected unless you use

the bar. Can you tell us what is making miserable in the DBB?

How long has he been in it?

Welcome to the group-

I'm going to reiterate what the others have said- the Wheaton brace

is a type of AFO (ankle-foot orthotic)and not recommended for

maintaining correction by the doctors who are following the Ponseti

method.

A KAFO (knee-ankle-foot orthotic) can maintain the outward and

upward stretching of the foot (an AFO *cannot* do this), but will

contribute to atrophy of the calf muscles, whereas the FAB (foot

abduction brace) allows the legs and ankles to move.

FYI- the Wheaton brace is not new, I don't know when it was invented

per se, but I've known about it for as long I've been on various

parent support clubfoot boards (5 years). There is a lot of past

discussions on our board about AFOs in general if you search the

archives. The bottom line is that the University of Iowa tried them

for a while but the rate of regression went up, so went back to the

FAB protocol.

Your son's best chance of avoiding a relapse is to use the FAB.

We're here to help you troubleshoot your problems with the FAB

(a.k.a. DBB-denis brown bar)...most of the time it's either that the

foot is not corrected and therefore not ready for the brace (though

the doctor might think it is) or the brace is not set up properly.

What doctor is your son seeing, and how long has the doctor been

using the Ponseti method?

Regards,

& (3-16-00), left clubfoot
