Guest guest
Good Morning and Becky Here I am. Sorry to put you off last night. How is it with an older one in casts? Well, start doing some weight-lifting now! It makes them heavy!!!! Try to find yourself a little child size wheel chair, it'll be worth it's weight in gold. If not child-sized, even an adult sized I think works better than a stroller, easier to use in my opinion, sits them up higher so they can roll up to a table, etc. And when lifting a heavy child, they aren't sitting down so low. That may depend on the stroller you have, too. I had no trouble with our regular car seat; at this age I assume she's in a pretty large forward facing seat, and will probably fit just fine. I think they can crawl - double check that with your doc. I believe the risk is if they stand up, they are liable to pull the ligiment loose before it grows in place. For the first few days or so I'd try to keep her off of them completely though. We returned at 6 weeks to have the casts removed. Then I think it was 6 weeks after that, then it went to more like 6 months for a couple trips, then down to an annual check up for a few more years. For bathing, that'll be a challenge. I could lay on the kitchen counter with his head over the sink for an occastional hair washing - but all in all personal hygein will have to suffer a little bit. You can use Q-tips to clean the gunk from between her toes to help keep them fresh. You can expect some leg weakness when the casts come off. Be creative there to help her regain her strength. I used a beach - lots of soft sand to walk in. He was back on his feet immediately, but he wasn't really walking with any degree of success for about ten days. Five years since his operation, his scars are almost invisible. They are two fine white lines running parallel on the top of his foot. You have to look for them to even notice. At Becky's age you have some advantage of being able to explain a little bit to her. She can voice her own questions, pains, etc., to you - but that may be a down side too, she can sweet talk you and beg in to breaking the rules If she's real active, she is liable to break her casts, did. The heels and knee areas became soft. I went to our local vet who sold me rolls of her fiberglass casting materials (same thing dr's use). I reinforced his heels and knees with that two or three different times. I hope some of this helps, you're welcome to ask more questions if you have them.
