Hi -

Dominic does not cry at all as long as we give it to him in his butt.

We use the butt most of the time.I don't think it hurts very much in

his butt. If we give the shot in the leg (we never do the arms) then

he does cry and one of us has to hold him down. We only do the legs

once in awhile. Also, when we do it in the butt he doesn't have to

actually see the shot, so I think that makes it easier on him.

Have you tried some type of sticker/reward system?

Good luck!

- Hi well we are really having it bad with the shots still it has

been one week yesterday and his anxiety level is off the charts!! I

can't go in the kitchen to just get a drink without him starting to

go hystericall thinking I am fixing to get it ready!!! I am about to

lose my mind!!! I feel so sorry for him. I have tried everything so

far, he could care less about sticker charts or rewards and

definitley does not like praise after wards!! We have been doing the

reward system on and off for years just on his behavior!!! He could

care less, he knows when I get it ready ..he runs from me and starts

screaming and then we hold him I try talking with him to calm him

down, I have even gotten the neigbors little girl over who has to

take allergy shots over and did the poking on her (with no needle)

and she would say see it doesn't hurt don't cry, but I don't

think he even hears her from him screaming so much, then when we do

do it and it is over he screams while crying that I am mean and he

doesn't like me and only the doctors are supposed to do this not

mommies!!!! I calmed him down last night by giving him money but it

was still after all the yelling and crying . I have talked to some

therapist and doctors to maybe recommend play therapy but when it

comes down to it he just doesn't care. I try to ask him where he

wants it but he just screams at me.He is really brusing bad also

because he jerks away when I am trying to pinch the site and bam I

get him and brusises.I have been talking to a lady even though he is

anxiety but she said her son did the same reaction(they both have

sensory Integragation disorder it might be from this his skin is to

sensitive) and found out it wasn't hurting but the med that she had

him on was really stinging like a bee sting. We are on nutropin A Q

and she was to and found out it was the meds burning.(A Q) then went

to regular nutropin now, She has now been using the cool click air

injection and he has been giving his own shot since he was 6 years

old I might have to look into this but I can't determine whether it

is the actualy time I insert it or not because he is already

hystericall I am going to try and hear if their is a difference.

Thanks so much for reply and advice...

I don't know if I can help but we have been giving my 3 year old shots for 3

weeks and it is just now getting a little better. He still starts asking if

we leave the room " are we doing the shot " so we try to stay by him from

after dinner till shot and he is a little less panicked now Just keep up

what you are doing, we let him throw away the shot or put on a movie right

after the shot or during the shot anything to change the subject of the shot

and that helps (a bugs life right now helps). I also don't let him dwell on

the subject and do anything to change the subject. If he has a question

about it I answer it and change the subject or go outside or read a book

anything to get his mind else where I just remind him this is to help him

and I just stay strong when he says mommy's don't do this You know what is

best for your child and don't for get that!!

Hey ,

I have dealt with ODD in the past with my son, and what Jen says does make

sense. I know that with my son, when a decision was made, we had to stick to

our guns, and see it through. You can't be wishy-washy with an ODD child. I,

also, haven't had to deal with a child with SID, so I can't help with that

part of the equation.

However, all that said, GHT is an " option " for our RSS kids. Some families

choose not to use it at all, and others choose to begin it's use later, when

the child can help in making the decision. I understand the diabetic

references in the other posts, but unlike a diabetic child, our RSS kids

won't die without GHT.

I would definitely look into changing the dilutant, the needle size, and/or

the pen, if that is what it takes to make the shot as painless as possible.

In the end, you are the only one that can make this very personal decision.

Only you know what you and your son can handle emotionally. Ask yourself,

" Is he playing me? " " Has he used to behavior before to get something. or get

rid of something, he liked or didn't like? " If the answer to those questions

is yes, then I would just stick it out, and see how it goes. It was

encouraging to hear that, although it's taking longer, Sindy's son is doing

better, and I think she has a good point in keeping his mind occupied on

something else, and not allowing him to dwell on the shots.

I'll be keeping you in my prayers.
