Guest guest
Kris, Many of the group members do not know that you are a Minister's Wife and about your wonderful missionary work. Please share this information (as much as you feel comfortable with) so people won't see this as a *gimmick* (not that anyone would doubt you, but given how the world is today)! I don't have any right at this minute (hubby was off work for 6 weeks, I've worked 4 days in that 6 weeks-he's back to work now but hasn't gotten paid yet). I know any little bit helps and I will help as soon as our March/April & May bills are paid up! Sheila
Guest guest
My work in Haiti is mainly as a music educator -- with the specific goal of equipping Haitian musicians to compose their own church music *in their native styles* instead of feeling like the only legitimate church music is the stuff they have to sing out of French hymnals or the translated American & English hymns. The hymnal stuff sounds *nothing* like their own music. Just as each person has a native (or " heart " ) language to speak in, we all also have (to one degree or another) a musical heart language... and no one musical language is more " legitimate " than another. Why should they be forced to sing to God in French, when they really speak Kreyol? What does that tell them about God -- that he only hears them when they sing in French? I don't think so. ANYWAY... stepping back down off the soapbox... that's what I'm involved with in Haiti. I'm not writing their music or telling them what to write. I'm just giving them the basic skills of theory and notation, then encouraging them to allow their creativity free reign. The things they come up with are outstanding and amazing! And so totally Haitian. It's just the kind of project I'd want to be involved in. This emergency situation is involving my closest Haitian friend, a man named Michelet. He is incredibly gifted in music and has taught himself to speak and understand English as well, so he always serves as my translator when I need him to (although I've picked up enough Kreyol to get by on my own now). He has been living in a house owned by an uncle, and this uncle's son is not a very nice person and has threatened to kill him if he doesn't leave. He needs a new place to live, but in Port-au-Prince, most landlords require a year's rent up front. This means that he needs about $700 US altogether (I found this out from one of my other friends; Michelet was too proud to tell me this and felt really bad even telling me that he was in a bad situation because he doesn't like to ask for help). I don't have that much money by any stretch -- my husband's a minister AND he also has another full-time job at a printing plant just so we can get by -- but I do have a lot of friends both here and across the country, and I'm hoping that if enough people feel led to give him a dollar or two, I can help him get a place to live where his life won't be threatened constantly. If I could've, I'd've already brought him home with me in my suitcase so he didn't have to have such a hard life there... but for now, it isn't to be. I have already been working on putting together the money to pay for my travel there in July... I've been doing watercolor paintings and selling them on eBay... someone on the list just recently bought one of them from me and I'm hoping she's already gotten it and likes it... if you'd like to see my work, just visit eBay and check for auctions by " mamakris " . I apologize for taking everyone's time, but I appreciate the prayers and support I've already received. Robin, you are DA BOMB and I mean that. Thank you. -Kris http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=mamakris on 5/5/04 6:58 AM, Sheila Renae at angel_of_mercy_911@... wrote: Kris, Many of the group members do not know that you are a Minister's Wife and about your wonderful missionary work. Guest guest
You are more than welcome and I think it is great what you are doing for them. They should be heard in their own language. I could not imagine having to go to church and doing it in latin like they used to do, I would probably not go. God Bless, Robin, NorthEastern, NY Age- 41 EDD- July 27th, 2004 IT'S A BOY!!!!!!
