Guest guest
Yes Randall - with regard to tongue am not sure if this is atrophy but for most of my life have had a really rough looking tongue with big grooves - my mother says it runs in the family but we have only just found out about the mito. I have defintiely heard about slurring and speech problems not sure whether this is due to atrophy or strokelike episodes. Sometimes especially lately I get tongue tied, and often I have discomfort when swallowing. Re p neck muscles that is a big problem to me but mostly spasm ie if I sleep with my head tilted in a certain way I get this massive spasmic headache in back of neck and behind eyes that lasts a day or two. I also get a tired neck but have heard others who have this worse - also my mitoneuro mentioned something about some people using a neck brace so it must be a problem with mito. pamela (melas) Tongue weakness/atrophy, speech or swallowing problems? When I asked about tongue weakness and atrophy being associated with Mito don't believe anyone wrote that they have either of these. Can I infer that Mito rarely if ever causes problems like tongue atrophy, tongue weakness, speech problems, e.g. slurring (often due to weak tongue and other muscles) or swallowing problems? I ask because latest neurologist thinks I have a mild form of Mito, yet I'm having these problems and think tongue atrophy possibly as well. Also, anyone have weakness of posterior neck muscles (difficult keeping head up)? Thanks, Randall
Guest guest
Randall Since you are talking about muscles, these would not be uncommon to see in mito. It isn't something everyone has, but that is true of all symptoms of mito. laurie > > > > > > > When I asked about tongue weakness and atrophy being associated with Mito > don't believe anyone wrote that they have either of these. My son does not have tongue atrophy (that I know of) but has periodic problems with slurring. He also has had increasing difficulty swallowing. He's going to be 18 in October and this has been a problem for the last couple of years. The mito cocktail has made a huge difference. Guest guest
Randall, I have had tongue weakness and swallowing difficulties at times. sometime I feel my speech is slightly impaired when I really don't feel well. Guest guest
This discussion regarding the tongue is really making me wonder about something I have experienced for a long time. There are periods where I have a really hard time talking because I feel like I have a mouthful of marbles. It comes and goes and the cocktail really decreased the sensation a lot. I just assumed it came from my deafness (hear with a CI), but maybe it might muscle issue??? I also have a problem where I get a terrible spasm when swallowing thin liquids like water. I have to be careful not to drink them too fast as it really hurts and it is like the liquid is stuck like a chicken bone. In a couple of seconds my throat relaxes and I am fine again. Guest guest
, Do you think you have any atrophy of the tongue or twitching? Does it just fluctuate without ever getting very bad? Noticing some slurring most days and think I can see clear signs of recent tongue atrophy, so still concerned this might be something like ALS rather than Mito, though have had fluctuating speech and swallowing problems before. Thanks, Randall Re: Tongue weakness/atrophy, speech or swallowing problems? Guest guest
As far as the swallowing goes, every once in a while I have a problem where like rice will get stuck in my throat. I have confirmed MELAS with mild symptoms. I sometimes cannot think of the correct word to say and will say things like put the dishes in the dryer when I mean the clothes. In fact saying things like that alot of the time is one of the symptoms that the mito doc who diagnosed me was looking for as well as those who are looking for neurological changes. I know that a lady in CA who I correspond with had said she has a lot of trouble swallowing as a symptom. She has not been tested for melas but her son has confirmed melas and had a stroke last year. My mother-in-law, who died last month had confirmed Parkinson's and was on meds for it. She had had trouble swallowing since last November or so. Guest guest
Ruth this is alot like what I get at times. Also is something I drink is too hat. I can get a temporary paralysis and not be able to swallow at all. I have learned if it doesn't start to go down because it is too hat to spit it back out in ahurry or I get burned!
