Guest guest
Callie B, Your doctor can give you a script for chewable prenatals. There are several on the market, you may want to ask for samples first as some definitely taste better than others!! Good luck!! Guest guest
Callie,. Let me again reiterate on this group that although I am a L&D RN, I am first of all, a mother who has experienced an unexpected pg (Extreme New year's Eve fertility after a few little teeny lime icy drinks! lol I also want to point out that all hospitals are different, BUTTTTTTTTT at our hospital, anesthesia will NOT do labor epidurals if the patient is anemic (or have a low platelet count so this may be a wonderful reason in itself to bump it up now so you will get your epidural if you so choose! > I had a lot of complications from my wls (3 years ago) and still have trouble eating enough, absorbing enough, and getting the nutrition I need. I have to keep a close eye on my iron levels as I'm borderline anemic most of the time (anemic the rest). <---------------Going into pg my hgb was nearly 15, I came out of the OR with a hemoglobin of 7.2. Now, I tried to breastfeed but he was a NICU baby and even with all of my attempts to BF for a week were in vain, because my breast milk was VERY nutrient poor. (looked like 1%/skim milk!). After my not responding to oral iron tabs, we opted to start IV infusions. > > I'm wondering... should I look for an ob who is familiar with wls and the nutritional needs of post-gastric bypass patients? Did any of you? If so, do you think it made any difference in your pregnancy experience? <<---------- I had one appt with the maternal-fetal med specialists, b/c of AGE! lol I'm tired- not been home too long and after playing w/boys, feeing them, and bathing them. Guest guest
Callie, HI! Welcome to the group! Right now I am in TX visiting my Mom but I live in Bloomington and just gave birth to my daughter, Hannah, this past April, I am 3 years post op. My OB was not familiar with WLS, I was his first patient, so he just followed my lead as far as the nutrition stuff and the test for gestational diabetes. He said that if we felt that I needed to see a nutritionist during the pregnancy that we would arrange that. I ended up losing 25lbs during my first trimester because of " morning sickness " but he wasn't concerned because that could happen to a normal pregnant woman, everything calmed down as soon as I hit my second trimester. Hannah was born and everything was fine with her. I was monitored more closely towards the end of my pregnancy but that was mostly because of my other medical problems and not because of my WLS. I have taken a chewable prenatal vitamin since I was post op, Nata-Chew or Nutrinate, you have to get a prescription for these so ask your OB for them. Good luck TTC and if you would like the name of my OB just let me know, he is great! Axelrod ob and other questions Hi, I'm new to this board (live in the Minneapolis/St. area of MN) and have lots of questions for you all as I get ready to try to conceive... I had a lot of complications from my wls (3 years ago) and still have trouble eating enough, absorbing enough, and getting the nutrition I need. I have to keep a close eye on my iron levels as I'm borderline anemic most of the time (anemic the rest). Therefore, I have some concerns about nutrition during pregnancy. I'm wondering... should I look for an ob who is familiar with wls and the nutritional needs of post-gastric bypass patients? Did any of you? If so, do you think it made any difference in your pregnancy experience? Also, I've been trying to find chewable prenatal vitamins. I have trouble taking the horse-pill sized prenatals I'm doing now, and with my absorption problems, I don't know if they're doing all they can. Where might I find chewable prenatals -- if there are such things? Thanks for whatever help you can give! Callie B - hoping to be pregnant soon! __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Welcome Callie. Yep, my OB's are in the same office complex as my wls doc. & both OB's have wls mom experience. Hmmm, I take prenatal capsules, apparently my system is absorbing 'em, my baby is 5 days bigger than his gestational age. Best wishes on the ttc. My lil 'secret' was yoga, HTH.
