Guest guest
Hi Cathy, My name is Pat and my g-son, , has RSS. We, too, went through a period (before 's g-tube was placed) where he preferred solids to formula. The Dr told us that this is because solids are heavier, and help with reflux. Could this little boy be suffering from silent reflux? Has he been tested for reflux, or delayed gastric emptying? Both of these, seem to be common problems with RSS kids. The Drs here missed 's reflux for a long time, and it eventually developed into an oral aversion. He is now 100% g-tube fed, and takes very little by mouth, although we have been making some baby steps with his eating lately. At 8.5 months of age, weighed only 8#. Bottle feeding was almost impossible at this point, and it was decided that a g-tube had to be placed. In Sept 2002, he had the triple procedure (fundo, pyloroplasty, and g-tube placement) done. At that time, he was on Similac with Iron, and polycose mixed to 30kcal/oz. After his g-tube placement, he was moved to Elecare, an elemental, pre-digested formula, mixed to 30kcal/oz. It was explained to us that he was working too hard, burning too many calories, just trying to digest his formula. With the EleCare all he has to do is absorb. Hope this helps. And welcome to the group! Pat (g-ma to , RSS, 25 months, 20# 5.6oz, 29.1 " , Prevacid, Singulair, GT)
