Re: OT - winter clothes on sale in USA - NY Tax

Hi - thanks to everyone who has replied.

Can someone explain to me what the tax thing is in New York? Does it apply to

other states?

Does the tax only apply to retail - or do they add it to other things eg

restaurants, taxis etc?

In the store is there a ticket price and then when you pay at the counter you

have to pay a certain % in tax? Need to be prepared, don't want to think I am

getting a bargain and then be shocked when they add on extra tax.

Can foreigners claim the tax when they leave the country if they spend over a

certain limit?

Thank you.

Hi Sharon.

San Diego and LA will be warm. Usually 60-70 degrees this time of year

(or warmer). NY will be cold! In fact, you will be freezing! I can't

imagine you would find winter clothes in California, because their winters

aren't that cold. However, you may find some in NY. All winter clothes

are on clearance already, so you should find some great deals!

Have a wonderful trip!! You are going to all the best cities. You will

have a lot of fun.

Sharon,

Once or twice a year you can purchase clothing in New York for one week tax

free. Otherwise, I believe that they charge 8% tax. could verify

that. I don't know if they do this in any other states but in New Jersey we

don't pay tax for clothes which is why a lot of New Yorkers find their way

to the Garden State Plaza for shopping. Oh and yes there is tax in

restaurants as well.

Hi guys,

Sales tax in NY is 8.75%. It is not listed on the ticket price so

you will be surprised to see it add up when they ring you up. During

tax free week the sales tax is lifted on clothes and shoes less than

$100 for each individual item. One of my favorite things about our

weekly trips to Baltimore was stopping in Delaware to go shopping and

paying no tax at all. I did all my toy shopping at the Toys R Us

right off the highway. It was great.

I thought New Jersey was sales tax free entirely. What do you pay tax

for? Come on up to Oregon Sharon, no sales tax here :~} The border is

only something like 16 hours from San Diego by car hehe.

I am weirded out having to pay sales tax. Right across the river is

Washington State and I can show them Oregon ID and not have to pay tax

(except for the restaurants). When I look at a price on the shelf, that's

what I expect to pay, not more. We have a pretty high state income and

property taxes here though so it's not like we don't pay. Many people in

the southern part of Washington do find their way to Oregon for shopping

purposes.

No tax would be just plain weird. Here in Oklahoma every thing you buy, and I

do mean everything! has a tax on it, around 9%.

here's another one for ya girls...

(but I think NJ as well has this too)

We don't pump our own gas! We just sit in the car, they do all the

work. It's very cool! In fact, it's illegal for us to pump gas here

lol. Can even get windows washed, oil checked... at any pump. Just like

in the movies.

This is good though, it rains a lot here and I for one am happy to sit in

my warm car and not get gasoline on me. Hate it when I have to drive

through other states, don't know how to work the pumps :~}

That is so funny Kori. I learned to drive in NJ (used to live there).

When I moved to Virginia, I didn't know how to get gas. Of course the

people working at the gas station were like " dumb blonde " , because I had

to ask them.

That is one thing I miss about Jersey, and the pizza.

Same here, Missouri and Illinois both will tax you til you drop. I

just can't imagine not paying tax on stuff, but I guess they probably

get you somewhere else in the price.

When I traveled to New York with a friend, we went to so many gas station to

find a pump your own until we finally realized there weren't any! I hate having

some one else to it for me. Plus, gas was $8 and I gave the guy a $20, and he

was going to keep all of it for a tip! I guess you like what you are use to!

We don't have sales tax in NH either. Just an 8% meal tax.

That is just not right! We have a few full service gas stations but

you pay extra for the gas, as if it isn't expensive enough already :(

when you have the attendant pump it for you. And to top it off we

have to pay sales tax on that gas that we just pumped ourselves!

That would be nice, we always have to futz around w/ $1.07 then you

have all this change running around, do you think you use less change

in Oregon? I have buckets of the stuff, probably enough to pay for

the tax on that refrigerator. If I was ever organized enough to get

it counted that is...

Wow, our gas has been fluctuating so much lately I can't keep up but I

think the last time I filled up it was about $1.85, so about the same,

but that was self-serve. The last time I got full-serve it was $1.95.

What's the reason for the law that says you can't pump your own gas?

Hi,

I just wanted to add that Kori is right we don't pump gas here in New

Jersey. I don't think I would even know how to do it! LOL

We don't pay tax on clothes but everything else is taxed at 6% (except in

Hudson County, its only 3% there).

Hi

How far is the (not sure if I will get the name right) Garden Plaza from New

York? Is it worth me taking time out of NY to visit this shopping paradise that

is tax free? If I sound odd, my geography of USA is poor. Correct me if I am

wrong but New Jersey and New York are next to each other on the map.

Ta

Sharon

PS if any of you come to Australia - you'll have to fill your own car with

petrol and the tax is included in the per litre cost, which is around $0.95

cents AND you get to clean your own windows.

We don't pay tax on clothes but everything else is taxed at 6% (except in

Hudson County, its only 3% there).

here's another one for ya girls...

Hate it when I have to drive

through other states, don't know how to work the pumps :~}

Hi Sharon,

Yes, you are right it is the Garden State Plaza. It is only about a ½ hour

maybe less from the Washington Bridge but I would imagine that being

quite a cab fair to get there. I think your better off checking out the

amazing stores inside Manhattan and if the kids are going to be with you

make sure you take them to the Toys ‘R’ Us at Times Square! They will love

the Ferris Wheel and the Jurrasic Park Dinosaur in there.

Have Fun!!

Hi

How far is the (not sure if I will get the name right) Garden Plaza from New

York? Is it worth me taking time out of NY to visit this shopping paradise

that is tax free? If I sound odd, my geography of USA is poor. Correct me

if I am wrong but New Jersey and New York are next to each other on the map.

Ta

Sharon

PS if any of you come to Australia - you'll have to fill your own car with

petrol and the tax is included in the per litre cost, which is around $0.95

cents AND you get to clean your own windows.

Hi,

I just wanted to add that Kori is right we don't pump gas here in New

Jersey. I don't think I would even know how to do it! LOL
