Guest guest
Randee, It has been my experience that there are two camps when it comes to good Dr.'s that treat autism. There's the camp that says " Your autistic child was born Autistic and the most that you can hope for is that he or she will be able to get enough therapy to help them to function " they offer very few practical medical ideas and are reluctant (putting it mildly) to do any real lab tests. In short, they think that we as parents are falling victim to the " quackery " and " trends " that are " supposed to help the kids, but really arent' helpful. Some Doctors will try to intimidate you. They will try to make you feel small and helpless and they will pat you on the head and send you home to " accept your child for the person that they are. " The other camp of Doctors is seeing the real need for medical tests and they really listen when parents tell them that things like the diet have really been helpful for their child. They willingly order many of the test that you ask for and will often welcome any treatment that will not further harm the child. Most important they do not claim to have all the answers (I would steer clear of Doctors that have miracle cures that they say will cure all autistic children). They are open minded. What I would do is go into the appointment with ALOT of questions about things that you've heard that could be helpful. Casually mention some of the things that you've researched and watch his eyes and his facial expressions. I would casually mention that some parents think that the GFCF diet is helping their children... If he starts with the " that hasn't been scientifically proven " speech, then you might want to consider seeing a Dr. that already believes in the Diet. If he seems open to the idea, then he might be open to some of the Biological interventions. Just some thoughts on a subject that is very close to my thoughts these days.
