Guest guest
My husband and I are going to New York with friends in a few weeks and I'm afraid that I'll either hold them up or have to stay behind while they have fun because of my challenges with walking any distance. Do any of you know of a way to get access to a scooter or wheelchair while out of town? Thanks,
Guest guest
You might try city hall ADA conpliance department, chamber of commerce and just do a search for rentals. Will you be in New York city or somewhere in the state of New York? Will you have transporation for the chair/scooter? sweeneyknits wrote: >My husband and I are going to New York with friends in a few weeks and >I'm afraid that I'll either hold them up or have to stay behind while >they have fun because of my challenges with walking any distance. Guest guest
You can usually rent wheelchairs or scooters at medical supply stores. You would be best to call ahead and reserve one. Since it sounds like you will have pushers, I'd suggest a manual chair than can be easily folded and put in a car or cab. If sight seeing, there are sometimes places that are narrow and then a manual can be folded and you walk for that portion. I had this experience in a cave once. Have fun, laurie > > My husband and I are going to New York with friends in a few weeks and > I'm afraid that I'll either hold them up or have to stay behind while > they have fun because of my challenges with walking any distance. Guest guest
Thanks for the suggestion - we'll be in Manhattan with a car - though I'm not sure the car will be of much help in Manhattan! As I said, I'd like to be able to keep up. One big challenge is that the friends we're staying with are renting a fifth floor walkup! I'll just have to take it one flight at a time, I guess. Guest guest
Laurie - Thanks for the info and advice. Our friends will be arriving before we do, so maybe they will be willing to track down a wheelchair.
Guest guest
Another idea would be to contact the MDA or other organizations to see if you could borrow a chair from their loan closets. You will need to save your energy throughout the day for those stairs. I use to have to sit on the steps and rest between flights even back when I was in college. Don't push too hard. laurie > > Laurie - Thanks for the info and advice.
