Guest guest
was moved into a bunk bed at 3 yrs old. He has routinely rotated top to bottom bunk on a nightly basis.....The bunkbed we have is solid wood (purchased from an unfinished furniture store) and has wooden side rails that go on both sides of the top bunk. We still keep them on the top bunk, but we can remove them when he is ready. > > Just trying to figure out what to do. Our 4 year old twins at what age would you move a child to the top bunk? Guest guest
Judith, My 10 yr old & 3 yr old boys have had bunk beds for just over a year. While my younger son sleeps in the bottom bunk, he is capable of climbing up & down, and I would be comfortable with him sleeping in the top bunk at this point. In case you do decide on bunk beds, I have a few pointers for you that may make you feel better about your choice. Look for a bunk bed that has rails which go completely across the sides (except for when the ladder attaches). Many bunk beds only have a rail that goes halfway across. I never understood why they made beds like this, because there is a small gap that a child could still fall out of, depending on how he/ she was laying in the bed. If you have the room, you might consider a twin over a full size bunk. I bought this, so that there was room for me to lay in the bed with my son in the beginning as he transitioned from a crib to a bed. Plus, the bottom bunk extends out further than the top, so in the event anyone fell from the top bunk, they would land on the bottom bunk. Finally, compare heights of different bunk beds. The one I chose was a bit higher than most - very functional since I can put drawers or a trundle under the bottom bunk if needed, and there is enough space for an adult to sit up on the bottom bunk without touching the bottom of the top bunk (try this & you'll see that you will have to duck to sit on the bottom of most bunks). That's also a plus of having a double sized bed under a twin. You just have to be careful that the overall height of the bunk will fit in your room & allow the child on the top bunk to sit up wihtout hitting the ceiling. Since you are debating between bunk beds & just a twin bed for now, look for a bunk bed in which you can separate the beds later on if you desire. Not all bunks separate, but this will save you a lot of money in the long run if bunks don't work out or if you ever want your kids to have their own bedrooms. Just an FYI - it took me a LONG time to find the perfect bunkbed that had all of these features, but it was well the search! Hope this was helpful! Good luck in your decision.
