Guest guest
Alison, I remember when my daughter Shelby's PT told me she would most likely struggle riding or trike and would most likely not ride a bike (with or without training wheels) until she was much older. Well, she never really did ride a trike she just went straight to a bike with training wheels. Now keep in mind that my daughter has no fear of anything (except having to get her finger pricked...lol) so at age 4 when we moved into our new house, she told my husband to take her training wheels off her bike...like you, I have little patience...but I said, just take them off....but stay close because you are going to have to put them right back on....well, to my surprise...and everyone else in our neighborhood, she took right off no falls, just big smiles...with a " I told you I could ride without training wheel mom " So, from now on, when she asks to do something I just turn my head and say, go for it. Just like I did when she took off on a motorized scooter and rollerblades......so hang in there, when he is ready, he will let you know.... ~ Mom to Shelby age 7 RSS
Guest guest
I was wondering if a lot of RSS kids have (or have had) great difficulites riding a bike. Jake (4 years old) has always had delays in all his gross motor skills, so I guess this shouldn't be too shocking to me. I guess sometimes I dream of how nice it would be to have Jake just pick something up easily and at the same time (or actually before) one of his playmates. He just seems to have no desire nor sense of how to do it. And I must admit I am not the most patient person. We had him in Toys R Us the other day to pick out a new bike that would fit him appropriately (his old one is too small) and it was so frustrating. We just walked out of the store with nothing, because we were so upset. At what age did your RSS kids have the ability to petal? Any thoughts, or suggestions here? One thing I did think was to talk to his private PT and see if we could bring a bike to some sessions and have her work with him on it.....she has the patience of a saint. Guest guest
Alison, I don't know if it is just RSS kids but I found my kids were all difficult to teach. Certainly not the picture perfect version where you run behind them, push and off they go. I thought I would lose my mind before any of them learned. I still have one more to go and I may have to get some sort of medication to help me through it. Seriously though, I found the biggest problem teaching was getting them to understand that they were responsible for their balance. Unfortunately training wheels make it worse because it teaches them to ride the bike at an angle and they don't have to hold the bike upright. It is also impossible to keep your balance if you don't pedal and steer. I guess the best advice I can offer is that they have to understand that a bike is not like a car. You cannot just sit on it and wait for it to take off and stay upright. Make sure that Jake can pedal, steer and keep his balance. Just so you know, is 5 and we plan to teach him this summer. Maybe we could bring a bike and teach them both in the parking lot at the conference! Pattie > I was wondering if a lot of RSS kids have (or have had) great > difficulites riding a bike. Guest guest
Alison, It's so funny that you should bring this topic up, because my mom and I were just discussing it the other day. We can't remember at exactly what age I learned to ride without training wheels, but there are pictures of me on my " big girl bike " that date back to right before my sixth birthday. I don't remember that I had difficulty pedaling, but it was more the balance issue for me. I do remember, however, that once I caught on to the idea that constant motion makes the bike easier to balance, I was unstoppable ! My younger brother (non-RSS) and I are less than 18 months apart, so I was always trying to stay ahead or keep up with him physically. I think having a sibling so close in age probably pushed me to do a lot of physical things faster than I would have been willing to try them on my own just because I wanted to stay ahead of the game (nothing like sibling rivalry to act as the ultimate motivating tool ). ~Hillary 21, RSS
Guest guest
, Tori will be 4 in July is working on the tricycle at school with her PT. I haven't found the right size for her yet to get one for at home. She just sat on it at the store and couldn't get it to pedel but I think she does pretty well with it at school. different surface to pedal on maybe. Guest guest
Hi Alison, Jordan started to pedal/ride his tricycle when he was 2 1/2 y/o. His lower extremities are good in terms of his gross motor skills. It's his hands that are a problem. He has trouble holding a pen/crayon, and has trouble writing. He writes with his hand off the paper - it's up in the air. His hands are very small compared to other children. Just try to be patient (I know easier said then done). Jordan drives me up the wall too. I think with practice over and over he'll get the hang of riding. That's what we did with Jordan.
Guest guest
, I know there are companies who make especially small bikes for smaller kids. Search the web that's where I found it but cant remember the name. Sindy Re: Bike Riding , Tori will be 4 in July is working on the tricycle at school with her PT. Guest guest
Hi Alison, and are both first learning to ride their bikes this year. They have small bikes made by Schwinn. The PT in school is working with both of them on this. She told me that most kids (especially with PT issues) have trouble keeping their feet on the pedals and was please that both of my kids are able to keep their feet on the pedals already. Good luck, Judith, Steve, (RSS) and (non RSS) 4 year old twins
