Guest guest
Dear Caroline Congratulations on the new one. It is alway so nice to get them here. I love the new baby, but I think I like not being pregnant (awful stuff ain't it) anymore. I am not the most experience mom with the club foot, but we casted my son for seven months (the last 6 weeks with a Ponseti doctor). The first 5 months were awful. Every cast was painful and he cried and never slept. Add that too the sensitive stomach (he was preemie) and life wasn't fun. When we started with the Ponseti doc. the change was amazing. Each new cast bugged him for a day or so. Then he became a totally different baby. The gassy stomach also went away-making us wonder how much of it was pain induced. It seemed like when his foot was put in a " natural " position it wasn't painful. I don't know if I am imagining things or what, but it makes sense to me. So I guess the thing I am trying to say and not saying is... Your baby will probably be a bit more fussy for a day or so after each new cast. But babies are very adaptable and he will soon accept the cast as normal. (My personal opinion is that with each casting the foot hurts less because it is closer to correction, that is what seemed to happen for us) I think the first on is the worst and it gets better from there. He was born with bilateral clubfeet (which we knew about already). He is wonderful and his feet seem to be very flexible which we are very happy about. We have his first appt on 3/8 and this will be his first casting. It's amazing, his feet don't seem as " bad " as I thought they would be. Part of me kind of likes them, and is dreading the whole process but as I have read many times on this board, you have to keep your eyes on the future and I definitely don't want him to be a 2 year old and still have problems. Please think of us on the 8th. I know every baby is different, but what can I expect after the casting? Will he be fussy and uncomfortable? Guest guest
Caroline there may very well be some discomfort and fussiness, but there shouldn't be anything like pain. It's normal to be apprehensive - but follow your gut, listen to your instincts. And let us know how it goes! s. Our New Baby is Here! On February 25th our son was born. Guest guest
Congratulations! How wonderful to have a healthy baby boy!!! Our son Weston was casted at 10 days old. I agree with what was saying.. usually they are a bit uncomfortable for the first day or two after casting. The first cast was the worst for us. I just gave Tylenol every 4 hours and held Weston quite a bit. Propping their little feet up also helps with rolled up towels/blankets. Weston also slept in his carseat which helped keep his feet elevated. We just put his carseat in the bassinet part of his pack and play. He was the most comfortable there it seemed. After the first 2 casts things got much easier. Bath time was kind of hard for our son with the sponge baths. Others have continued regular baths, wrapping the cast up with plastic, etc. You might want to ask how others did this. Good luck and enjoy that little one! Guest guest
Caroline, Congratulations! Your emotions are so raw/tender sweet right now, I want to have another just to be there again!!! Did you find a Ponseti doc to treat ? Hopefully so and then you can rest assured that the casting will only last a short time! Our daughter was brought to full correction in 4 casts 6 weeks total in casts, it goes by soooo fast!
