Hi Randall

Only some people with a mito disorder have a mitochondrial DNA

inheritance (from the mother); problems with nuclear DNA also disrupt

mitochondrial function. These could be inherited from either parent,

or from both in recessive situations, in which neither parent would

have symptoms. Spontaneous mutation in the individual is also

possible too.

See the MDA article on mito:

http://www.mdausa.org/publications/mitochondrial_myopathies.html

You have to read quite a way down to get to the inheritance part. It

also contains other links to material on DNA inheritance.

Also good is: http://www.ccjm.org/pdffiles/COHEN701.PDF

from the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation, although discussion

of the inheritance question is brief.

I'm sorry I can't answer your other questions, although I'm pretty

certain that other people have both neck weakness & swallowing

problems. We're not sure if I actually have mito, but my neck is the

most painful part of me on a regular basis, and I have mild

swallowing issues, although they don't involve the tongue.

Cheers

Cindy

with Mito having) atrophy of tongue (along with some weakness, speech

or swallowing problems)? Posterior neck weakness (difficulty keeping

head up)?

like low IgA IgG or IGG? I have low IgM but normal IgG and IgA,

which supposedly is rare. How about any association with

antiphospholipid antibody syndrome or other autoimmune disorders?

Finally, have been told in past by various neurologists that I have a

very high-arched palate, which sometimes is associated with

myopathies. Anyone have this or heard of this connection? Find it

interesting, because this is also associated with some connective

tissue disorders.

your mother and others in her family line also must have had it in

some form?
