I still can get very painful lower backaches (usually in the early evening), though (I still have 60 lbs to lose, however). I have had physical therapy --- massage and infrared heat as well as education about back-strengthening/abdomen-strengethening exercises. That really worked (temporarily).... I've also read they are doing some kind of surgery to 'fill in' the gaps in the spine (with botox? Other stuff?). It's experimental now but may be promising. all the best, lap ds with gallbladder removal January 25, 2001 Dr. Gagner/Mt. Guest guest
Although I don't know " how to get rid of sciatica " ... I know you're going to think I'm nuts but I've been able to " control " the pain by wearing light weight shoes. Most athletic shoes are a little " weighty " ... try shoes that are less leather and more lighter weight. I know that sounds really crazy but its worked for me. In fact, my orthopedist has made this suggestion to several of his patients and he's reported back to me that its worked for some of them. What have you got to loose? Guest guest
Hi Judie! Okay, don't think I'm crazy but I have suffered from sciatica since I was a teenager and the only thing I ever found that finally worked was a combination of ultrasound, acupuncture and electrical stimulation. No pain killers ever touched it. Losing weight actually made it worse. I would recommend going to a pain treatment center, they usually use those alternative methods with that kind of chronic pain. At least in California they do. :-) For the last 5 years my sciatica has been very mild! Tracey in San Diego > Sheesh! Guest guest
I was diagnosed with sciatica a long time ago, and one of the things the dr said to do which made it much, much better, is to never sit on the edge of a chair. After I was told that, I noticed that I sat on the edge of the chair at work all day long. So I made a concentrated effort to sit all the way back on a chair, and luckily, it's better. Guest guest
Seriously (really), how do you know that it is an inflammation of the sciatic nerve and not just muscle pain? I am on week three of a slowly moving (started in the right hip joint and has moved to encompass both sides of my lower back) lower back pain that, like a bad head cold, just won't go away. I continue to exercise, BTW (recumbent bike and universal (pulley) weight machine) every other day. It gets worse when I sit in a chair. Getting up is dreadful for at least the first ten steps; then it becomes slightly more bearable. --Steve At 4:06 PM +0000 8/21/01, snurfles@... wrote: >...I would recommend going to a pain treatment >center, they usually use those alternative methods with that kind of >chronic pain. Guest guest
Have you considered acupuncture with electrical nerve stimulation? It sounds painful, but its not.. and acupuncture has helped me with other nerve damage troubles.. not sciatica, but carpal tunnel.. Guest guest
Seriously (really), how do you know that it is an inflammation of the sciatic nerve and not just muscle pain? >>> well for one thing Ive been living with it for along time now...since 1990.....I have scar tissue wrapped around the nerve on the left side from back surgery. Suddenly, the last few weeks its bothered me on the right side. It travels down to the knee and then goes a little beyond that down the sides of the calf. Sitting on the toliet is torture near that nerve! Feels like its burning! It comes and goes...... Ah.....the joys of old age LOL Judie Re: sciatica > Seriously (really), how do you know that it is an inflammation of the > sciatic nerve and not just muscle pain? Guest guest
, its weird but the sciatica flared up more after the surgery than it did before. I wonder if there is a connection to that and my bad arthritic knee? I ask becuz the pain goes from the butt to the knee and a bit below the knee on the side.....I sure hope it doesnt mean another herniated disc! At least, Im not in agony over back pain like I was with the first one.....Walking is sometimes the pits with this pain! Judie

Guest guest
Hey Judie, Just popping in for a quickie. Reasons for why your joints, back, body parts hurt after weight loss, sometimes more than before: Hypothosis according to moi, When you have an excess of weight, or an injured (weak) body part, your whole body shifts alignment to compensate for it(them). As you lose weight, your entire center of gravity shifts along with a lot less body area to distribute the weight. Therefore, until your body adapts to the new compensation, or weight loss, and gets healthy, everything hurts. I am supposing this because after my knee replacement, my left hip and right leg which have always been fine, are killing me. Doc said I am no longer compensating, limping, and leaning to the right, like I have been all along, so now the other parts are taking a beating! How special! shriek Hugs, Theresa P.S. I hope this is partially coherent, as I am in pain killer heaven right now! > , > its weird but the sciatica flared up more after the surgery than it did > before.
