Guest guest
- I know one of the biggest differences with Dr. H's test and others is that she requires that MILK be used for the test, NOT barium. Her reasoning is that why test with a product that a child wouldn't be eating or drinking under normal circumstances!!!! We are very new to delayed gastric emptying. I can only tell you the couple tidbits of info Dr. H relayed to us this past visit. 1) For , because she is currently gaining weight and her reflux is UNDER control with the meds (first emptying test indicated bad reflux, new meds given, this test showed NO reflux!!!!), Dr. Harbison wants to do NOTHING medically except continue the Miralax for GI constipation/health. (and of course continue all other meds). 2) She did say that if the child was failure to thrive, reflux was fine with meds and still not gaining, then pyloroplasty may be considered (surgical fixing). There is also medication one can use to help speed up emptying times, but she didn't mention it, and our local GI out here VERY MUCH was against it. Can't recall the med name, but he said there were some not good side effects from it, and that he personally wouldn't put a child on it for life (since delayed emptying is congenital and wouldn't change with age) instead of just fixing the problem. 3) For because she does suffer from sudden onset hypoglycemia, especially with exertion/heat, this was the most important impact of the DGE. If we try and give her food to get her blood sugars up, but she has intermittant DGE and the food just sits there, her blood sugars will crash. We can no longer count on food as a safety net for sudden hypoglycemia. So we now have glucogel and/or frosting gel that we put in her cheek in emergencies. still has to eat every hour (Dr. H says that 's body has learned to eat small amounts every hour in order to balance both the reflux and the delayed gastric emptying, so that she is never too full). Good luck, !!! For those of you who don't know, and W. and several other parents are literally changing the New Zealand medical system on their own!!!! They are battling the entire country for getting approval for growth hormone for SGA children. These moms who just years ago knew nothing about RSS/SGA are changing the future for their children and others. Go ladies!!!!
