I posted a few weeks ago about my daughters constipation after

switching to pediasure with fiber. I dont know what pippins diet is,

so I cannot suggest changes, but we switched from rice cereal to

oatmeal cereal (we always add cereal to pediasure. are giving her

more water in between meals, giving a jar of prune, and she is fine

now.

Hi Jenyfer

As soon as Liam gets constipated his gut seems to slow down and he

doesnt tolerate his feeds as well.Prune juice is our first line of

attack.

Liams constipation is usually due to a bit of dehydration, it doesnt

take much, I know its getting cooler in Australia, is it warming up

over there, could mean she needs a bit more water added over the

summer.

We saw Liams gastoenterologist yesterday, who has decreased his day

feeds to try and start some interest in food, but again pointed out

not to let him dehydrate, he has always put alot of emphasis on this

(we even got airconditioning at home on his advice- not cheap either)

Good luck

OK here is another one of those " icky " almost too personal

questions. I have been constipated. I was taking bulk fiber --

FiberCon EVERY day. It kept me regular and flowing fine. I was

talking to the nurse at my old doctor and she said I shouldn't take

it everyday. So I started taking it every 2-3 days. So, for 3-4

days I have been " stopped up " . Finally today I was able to go to the

bathroom and I was in such pain. I went for about 30 minutes. I

literally, LITERALLY lost 2 pounds afterwards!!!!!!!! Now that I

have given you WAY too much information---lol Here's my question, is

there something I can take EVERY day to keep me going regular? I

can't drink those fiber drinks........GAG! I do eat high fiber bread-

--when I eat bread. What other natural foods help in that

department? Thanks so much my online support team!!! YOu guys have

been awesome for this first time mama!!!

Colace works really well and you can take up to 3 a day. Constipation

was absolutly the wors pregnancy symptom I've had so far! It was so

bad I thought it would be easier to give birth every day. I also eat

1 packet of instant oatmeal a day and I have been on a daily schedule

ever since. That was at about week 9-10 and now I am at 31 so it

seems to be working for me. Another thing is the extra iron some

pregnant ladies take can make things wors but if you can get the

citrical prenatal vitamins they have a stool softener in them and

those may help some instead of your regular vitamins. Good Luck - I

hope everything " comes out OK " - Diane

I am taking a 1/2 dose of fibercon every day and it's doing just

fine!! Do you take the caplets? If so - take 1 instead of the 2.. see

if that helps..

Hi:

I had my surgery on November 30 and

since I went to Stage III I have had terrible constipation. I have

begun taking colace twice a day and still need to take milk of magnesia

to have a bowel movement. I have also tried Benefiber, but that doesn't

seem to work either...I am up to over 64 oz of fluid a day already but

nothing seems to help. Any suggestions....Also will this continue

the rest of my life? I know I am not anywhere near the 1000 to 1200

calories a day with just eating 1/4 cup of food three times a day and that

having a bowel movement every 3-5 days is considered normal.

Any help you can give would be appreciated!

Thanks,

I guess that being with Richmond you don't drink protein drinks, do

you? I did, and I added about a tablespoon of some high fiber

cereal or ground flax seed into my protein shakes and that helped me

be a little more regular. Perhaps you can put some ground flax seed

or bran flakes into something you eat, or just try eating about a

tablespoon of bran flakes each day?

Another thing that helped me was I ate about 2 to 3 tablespoons of

fat free refried beans, mixed into my scrambled eggs. Beans are

high fiber and can help keep you regular.

Of course, my surgery was through Pacific Bariatrics, so I'm not

sure how close their stages are to Richmond's recommendations.

Hope this helps.

Pam:

The constipation is normal. For some of us, it remains an issue. In

my case, I have no problem at all. This may sound conterintuitive,

but I make sure I get enough fat in my diet (not a lot, but enough)

to help with bodily functions (it's a natural lubricant).

When I don't have enought fat in my diet, it's like bricks. When I

do, everything comes out with no problem.

But give it time. You're just taking your first few steps. Skipping

a day or so (of doing number 2) is not out of the question at first.

Pardon the graphic description, but when I was heavy, I sometimes had

to go up to 5 times a day (all that food going in had to go out).

Now, once a day does it for me. It's another part of the freedom. I

don't have to worry if I'm going to need to " sit down " in some

unfamiliar place. I'm regular like clock work, and if not, at least

I know I won't break a toilet somewhere.

However, if it becomes a problem, call Kaiser.

Take care.

Hi Sandi:

Thanks for the suggestions. You

are right I am not drinking protein shakes. However, I recently bought

some flax seeds so I will grind them and try adding to my cottage cheese....I

am ready to try anything! Cereal is something that Richmond also

wants us to stay away from....They think it can make us gain weight. Plus

we have been told to stay away from beans until after twelve weeks (Stage

IV)....Wish all the Kaiser Centers would have one program to follow...It

seems everyone has their own ideas what is best to do.

Thanks again!

I have always had this problem and its worse since surgery. I take a

stool softener twice a day every day as part of my daily vitamin

routine. You can also buy flax seed(ground Walmart has it) and stir

it in yogurt..that helps alot. Ive just always had it...but it does

get extremely uncomfortable at times. Also try unsweetened dry fruit

like dried prunes or apricots.

Sorry to hear you are suffering the same plight I did at that stage.

For me it was so bad that I had to have a cholonic done and had to

use quite a few suppositories. It was awful but nothing compared to

that feeling of being blocked up.

Stay away from the Benefiber.

What I have found successful to this day is this.

I use ground flax seed I got at Whole Foods, you have to buy it from

the refridgerated section in the bulf foods isle. This flax seed once

put at room temp will go bad. Otherwise in the fridge once you open

it you have 90 days to use it. I keep it in a zip lock bag with the

measure spoon so it is easy to grab.

Daily I mix in 1 tablespoon to 1 oz of unsweetened applesauce from

Trader Joes and add a little cinnimon to it. Tastes like apple pie!

Seriously! Then at lunch I have that same 1 0z helping after I have

eaten my protien.

At night I take 2 stool softeners and then every am I have a bm. NO

problems at all since I started this routine. Occasionally if I

travel I have stopped the flax seed and keep up on the stool

softeners, but once you can eat more you will find that it is easier

to get in enough roughage to help you along.

With drinking that much water in a day, your flax seed will really

help keep things moving. You might not even need to take two

softeners every night. sometimes I only have to take 1 or non

depending on what I had to eat that day.

Good luck!

Hi:

After hearing everyone's' suggestions

- I definitely will start having 1-2 tablespoons daily of ground flax seeds...

Thanks everyone!

One other question - I know I am a " newbie "

but when do you start feeling hungry again? I am 7 weeks out and

still have to remind myself to eat...I know this won't last forever so

I was just wondering when it will end?

Chronic constipation is my only long-term inconvenience. (I'm 2.5

years post-op.) I take a combination stool softener/laxitive

(Alberton's house brand-Eualine) every day, and must also use

a couple times a week. I consider it a small price to pay,

for being alive and 240 pounds lighter.

Once you are post op, you can't drink enough water right away, you

have to build up to it. For the effects of benefiber to work

correctly you have to consume up to 100oz of water was told this from

the customer service dept of the product!! It takes us post ops at

least 2-3 months to work your way up to 64oz a day.

So, in light of this, Benefiber has the opposite effect and you will

get cement butt, pardon the non medical term. You have to realize

that taking the required calcium and iron suppliments also have

constipating effects. Lack of water consumption ups the constipation

percentage. Don't need benefiber adding to it.

Some people don't have a problem with taking benefiber, but clearly

Pam had the same result I did. Thus my advice on what worked for me

was addressed to her.

I mentioned this to my surgeon in post op meetings and he said that

they were going to readdress recommending Benefiber as a constipation

relief effort in the binders they hand out at orientation. I don't

know if that has happened yet though.

For me it was about 10 weeks out I started to get that hungry feeling

again. But it wasn't overwhelming and I still don't get the same

hunger pains I used to get. If you drink water, your pouch will be

tricked into thinking it is full. Nice tool that pouch!

I forgot one of the most important things . . . Make sure you DRINK

PLENTY OF WATER!!! Water helps a multitude of problems, including

constipation.

Good luck with that all.

Pam I was the same way after stage III, constipated so bad. Nothing for me worked alone. I had to use the Milk of Magnesia and as soon as I was emptied from it I had to start on the Benefiber 3 x day every day, exercise and all my water. If I missed any of it back to constipation and do it all over again. I don't have that problem any more. I had diarrhea for 4 weeks after surgery, then bad constipation for about 4 weeks, then finally with doing all this I was able to keep my body working normal except if I don't do these things, and I still have trouble with diarrhea if it's a new food, but I have IBS and Reflux. I wrote up a big thing on constipation before, don't have it any more, but you can go to Web MD Health and type in constipation and read about it. I haven't had to use Milk of Magnesia as long as I drink my water, exercise, take benefiber 3 x day ( this is okay with bariatrics) and if I feel like I might be

starting to get constipated a little flax seed in something. I mainly eat protein because of the IBS and reflux have problems with alot of other foods, and I have a problem with absorption of vitamins, so I really need the proteins and the shakes don't do me good at all. I hope this helps. Take care. Donnapsutherland@... wrote: Hi: I had my surgery on November 30 and since I went to Stage III I have had terrible constipation. Pam I didn't start getting hungry until I was about 7 months. Even when we could go up to 4 oz meals I couldn't, I stayed at 2 then moved to 3 oz, now at almost 9 1/2 months post op I do 4 oz meals, I still can go for a half a day without even wanting to eat, but I don't. I make sure I eat my 4 oz protein meals 3 x day. So I'm not sure there's a real answer to your question when. I also have never ate things I'm not suppose to, and I haven't had any carbs so I believe this has helped and that's why I could get to goal fast and am maintaining right between 137-140 pounds, in a size 6 petite. I exercise, do my vitamins, water and eat the 3 meals even when not hungry. Your doing great. Keep up the good work. Donnapsutherland@... wrote: Hi:

After hearing everyone's' suggestions - I definitely will start having 1-2 tablespoons daily of ground flax seeds... Thanks everyone! One other question - I know I am a "newbie" but when do you start feeling hungry again? I am 7 weeks out and still have to remind myself to eat...I know this won't last forever so I was just wondering when it will end? For me it was so bad that I had to have a cholonic done and had to use quite a few suppositories. It was awful but nothing compared to that feeling of being blocked up.Stay away from the Benefiber. What I have found successful to this day is this.I use ground flax seed I got at Whole Foods, you have to buy it from the refridgerated section in the bulf foods isle. This flax seed once put at room temp will go bad. Otherwise in the fridge once you open it you have 90 days to use it. I keep it in a zip lock bag with the measure spoon so it is easy to grab.Daily I mix in 1

tablespoon to 1 oz of unsweetened applesauce from Trader Joes and add a little cinnimon to it. Tastes like apple pie! Seriously! Then at lunch I have that same 1 0z helping after I have eaten my protien. At night I take 2 stool softeners and then every am I have a bm. NO problems at all since I started this routine. Occasionally if I travel I have stopped the flax seed and keep up on the stool softeners, but once you can eat more you will find that it is easier to get in enough roughage to help you along. With drinking that much water in a day, your flax seed will really help keep things moving. You might not even need to take two softeners every night. sometimes I only have to take 1 or non depending on what I had to eat that day.Good luck! Kay I buy the Benefiber chewable tablets so they don't have to be taken with water, and I can carry them with me just like I do all the vitamins if I'm not going to be home. Then I just drink my water like I normally would and at least the 64 ozs, but even before 64 ozs the chewables worked for me. I guess each of us have to find what works for them. Take care. Bren Bren, I hear a lot or I should say I read a lot

on here and other groups about the flax seed. Is it a

laxative and does it make you feel bloated/full?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Its not a laxitive, and no it doesnt make you feel bloated. I love

it, it has a nutty kind of flavor and I mix it into my yogurt. I

posted a while back about its benefits, but to tell you the truth I

dont remember all of them. Regularity was only one of its many

benefits. You can google it and find out more info.
