Thanks mitomomtoo mitomomtoo@...> wrote: Hello Friends, Sorry I have been pout of touch for so long. I have been dealing with one thing after another with myself and the boys. My oldest has been home at least once a week for at least 2 months now with awful headaches and my younger son has been having break thru seizures that we can't seem to control. I have been to what seems like a gizillion pain docs and FINALLY I got an appt with a Neuro Spine Surgeon. After countless blocks and attempts of one med after another to no avail, I am recoverying from a discogram done last week. A severally herniated cervical disc at C4-C5 was seen. I am scheduled for a cervical spinal fusion with a donor bone graft w/ plates and screws on May 18th. I tried to get the surgery scheduled asap because we are in FL and school gets out on the 23rd and they start half days on the 19th. Just my luck! Three kids home right after surgery! I would appreciate any input from any of you who may have had spinal surgeries or suffer with disc problems. I have been keeping up with the posts but have been running from one appt to the next, and this has been my first chance to sit down long enough to post. Guest guest
Hi, Best of luck with your surgery! I know what you have been going through, chapter and verse. It is not easy. I had a 10 year history of upper back & neck/head pain before I found an orthopedic spinal surgeon who would even discuss a discogram with me, much less order one. Sure enough it was positive, and I had a cervical fusion, I believe also at C4 C5. (I usually repress any memories of that time, in 1992) They also removed the intervening vetebra because 2 discs were involved, and then put a bone graft from my hip. It was not easy, but do-able. I wore a big metal contraption/cervical support for 3 months, and the pain slowly subsided. The bones healed right on schedule. I liked that brace because I felt it protected me from inadvertent movements or bumps from other people. I did feel very vulnerable - took my cane when I went out, way after I really needed it bc I wanted ppl to see that I was delicate. I needed a full year or better before I could go back to work, though. At the time I could not understand it, but in retrospect it fits into my overall pattern. I do believe the surgery (a lot of physical stress on the bod) or the anesthesia (still wonder) or enforced inactivity afterwards, or.....something kicked off spinal pain in the rest of my middle back, heavy duty muscle weakness, and overall decline in function. To this day I don't know what did it,, but I strongly feel " probably mito " was at work. I just took a very long time to begin to have the same level of general abilities that I had before. For me, I always do worse after an " enforced rest " . Seems like my muscles need to move and work to keep them working. Anyway, if i get into another major surgery situation, I will do my darndest to devise some sort of work-out in between the prolonged rest, with some part of my body, as soon as I can. Just me. From my reading I think the surgeries themselves are successful most of the time, and a good degree of pain relief is found. The adjacent discs need to do all the " shock absorbing " so we need to be careful, life-long, not to stress them too much. I also feel improper posture - due to inherent inner core muscle weakness (probably mito related)- made me a candidate for neck problems way before I ever got rear-ended, and I still watch my posture carefully. Also, years before my surgery I limited my pain meds only to those times that I could lie down and sleep afterwards, and did not take much after my surgery, because I stongly felt that when they masked the pain, it could/did result in my making " wrong moves " which ultimately increased my problem. I still feel that way with orthopaedic/mechanical pains and strains - I assume they are fixable, & want to know what body positions/activities are better and worse. Again, just me. So, some suggestions Get yourself in the best possible shape before hand, knowing you will be inactive for a while Make sure you don't have a cold, virus, etc. That can cause mito ppl problems on top of the stress of surgery Make sure they are careful about the anesthesia - sounds like your doc is up on stuff. Put your household on alert - you must be the number one priority for quite a while - you will need time to heal and get your whole self back on track. I do hope you have an easier time than I did with recovery, but know there can be a wide range, and what the docs tell us doesn't always happen. I did recover fairly well, but it was a lot longer than what I was told. It does sound like you have done a lot of research, and are trying to prepare yourself. Sorry I could not tell you " It was a breeze. " Wishing you a good and speedy recovery. Guest guest
Sunny, Thank you for giving me such a detailed idea of what to expect! I am trying to do everything I can that will make the recovery easier when the time comes. I am glad that the surgery brought you relief! The bone graft I will be having will be from a bone bank, the doctor said the usually don't harvest bones from the hip anymore--------modern technology!!! Thanks, > > > Hello Friends, > > > > Sorry I have been pout of touch for so long. I have been dealing > > with one thing after another with myself and the boys.
