Hi

I was wondering if anyone has used Lyrica for nerve pain or PN ?

My Pain Management doctor was out last week when I had my appointment and the

doctor who covered for him prescribed this for me. I never had this doctor

before and he doesn't know my history and doesn't know anything about Mito.

If you have used this medication please let me know if it helped or not and if

you had any side-effects from it.

Thanks

Hugs,

Ann-Marie

Hi Ann-Marie,

I'm not using Lyrica myself, yet, but my sister just started it a few weeks ago.

It seems to be helping more than the Neurontin and Cymbalta did, and it hasn't

seemed to have many side effects, other than some tiredness, as it is an

anti-seizure medication, similar to the Neurontin. Lyrica is formulated

especially for Neuropathy, and when I asked my pharmacist about it, she said she

has a handful of people on it, and she hasn't heard any negative comments on it.

Of course, it's pretty new here in the United States, so time will tell just how

effective it really is.

Take care,

Cin

Hi Ann Marie,

Lyrica has only been approved by the FDA for a short period of time. The

clinical research studies demonstrated the it is effective for neuropathic pain,

ie peripheral neuropathy, pain associated with shingles and some types of

seizures. I don't personallay know any one that is taking this drug but the

research studies were encouraging.

Just want to add to this, as I should have in my last post... Lyrica is new in

the United States, but it has been used for several years in the European

countries, so it has been around for a while, just not in the US.

Ann-Marie,

During this past hospital stay, my neurologist suggested changing

from Neurontin to Lyrica. We didn't make any changes yet, as we were to

busy with med issues in the hospital, but he wants to pick this

discussion back up at my follow up appointment. Sorry I don't have any

experience with it, but I do know that my neurologist is starting to use

it in many patients for neuropathy.

Smiles,

Hi Joanne,

Thanks!! I thought the drug was relatively new on the market. I am glad to hear

that the research studies down were encouraging. That makes me feel a lot better

about using it.

I know that it is mainly used for people with diabetic neuropathy, so hopefully

it will work for those of us who have peripheral neuropathy as well.

Hugs,

Ann-Marie

Hi Cin,

This is great information. I know when Cymbalta came out there was a lot of hope

that it would do well. But I have spoken to many doctors and people who tried

Cymbalta and it didn't work for them. I know that everyone doesn't have the same

reaction to medications, so I hope Lyrica will be helpful.

Does your sister have Mito or peripheral neuropathy? I hope Lyrica continues to

help your sister.

Thanks

Hi Ann-Marie,

The Dr.'s still aren't sure what is going on with us, but we both have

neuropathy as one of our symptoms. We are also deaf. Our mom and other sis

have both of these symptoms, too. The Dr.'s thought at first it might be

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disorder, or the Mito, but now they think it is Hereditary

Sensory Neuropathy. But, all the tests have been inconclusive, so nothing has

been determined or ruled out 100%. The only way to tell, is to have more

genetic testing, and we aren't going to go that route right now, since the

symptoms are all the same, and there is no cure, so we don't feel any need to go

on to find out the exact cause at this point. Basically, for both, it would be

management of pain and symptoms, so, I really don't care if I have purple-punk

hair disorder, I just want the pain to be manageable! LOLOL.

Take care,

Cin

It seems that lyrica has gotten a lot of attention here in the past

couple of days. As someone who has had neuropathic pain most of my

life, and who stopped trying new meds for it some years ago, I would

be very appreciative if those of you who try it can share your

experiences. If you've been on neurontin, I'd be interested in knowing

if it has the same side effects (especially drowsiness and dry mouth,

which I understand can cause kidney problems if one doesn't drink a lot).

Thanks,

Shayna
