Guest guest
My daughter is nine days old. She has just received her first casting today on her right foot. I was told her foot was a severe clubfoot with a rating of 6. She immediatly seemed very uncomfortable even at times having a painful cry. I was wondering is this normal? Is it painful for her? What can I do to make her comfortable? What can I expect after her tenotomy? Will she be in alot of pain afterwards? Please give some insight in this matter. I'm a worried mommy and just want some more information. Thank you.
Guest guest
Your daughter will experience some uncomfortness, however, she should not be screaming in pain for extended amount of time or be unconsolable. Maybe give her some Tylenol or Motrin to help a little. Keep her casted foot elevated with a rolled blanket, this will make it a little more comfortable. Constant cuddling and consoling will give her added comfort. May I ask who your doctor is? Also, if the manipulation and casting is done incorrectly, that will cause pain. If she continues to be VERY uncomfortable and in a lot of pain after 24 hours, I would question the casting. HTH. Hang in there. Guest guest
Totally agree to all that. We casted nonPonseti for five months and my baby seemed to always be in pain. Casting Ponseti way was wonderful. Suddenly no pain. Well, a bit of discomfort and such but not crying for hours in pain. The first cast is the worst, it gets better from there. As for the tenotomy... It is very minor and really quick. Very little pain associated with it. My guy was fussy for a day and cried a bit when he knocked his cast on something hard. After that it was life as usual. And it is worth it-so cool to see that little foot all cute and footsie. Now if we can just survive the brace and the teeth and all that we should be good. Good luck, you will do well. > Your daughter will experience some uncomfortness, however, she should not > be screaming in pain for extended amount of time or be unconsolable. Guest guest
Welcome to our group and congratulations on your baby girl! I agree with the others- It is hard for us to diagnose your little one's cries- in short, the manipulation and casting should *not* be painful. She may be a bit uncomfortable and frustrated at not being able to move her leg, but should not be in *pain*. Is there enough padding around the top edge of the cast, or is the plaster rubbing on her leg? There is a lot of good information for you at Dr. Ponseti's website, and in this group's files, links, and photos sections. Here is a link to a booklet (it does contain graphic medical photographs) that you can download that describes the Ponseti method in detail: http://www.global-help.org/publications/ponseti-cf.html Do you mind telling us what doctor or hospital is treating your daughter? Have you been specifically told that they are using the Ponseti method and did they review with you what they expect as far as the treatment that she will need? Are the casts from toe-to- groin? How often will they be changed? There's a parents' checklist at this site: http://members.tripod.com/ponseti_links-ivil/ Hope this helps! Please ask any questions that you may have!
