I tried the Atkins (well, Atkins-like, I had too many veggies to be true

Atkins) and did extremely well on it. Then, I was being tested for metabolic

muscle disease and was put on the " drink sports drinks while you exercise,

small carb-rich meals " kind of deal by my doctor (Tarnopolsky, McMaster in

Hamilton) ... I do not have that particular metabolic disease, and gained 40

pounds in 2 years and my walking ability plummetted. Don't get me wrong, I

don't blame the medicos, but I'm perhaps a little tired of doc after doc trying

stuff out, causing harm then saying " wow! you don't have what i thought, so i

cannot treat you " ... One wonders whether I would be more able nowadays if I

had never gone to see a doctor at all :)

I am now convinced by what I have read, my own experiences and of course, the

things i have seen on this list ... I need a high protein diet. I do very well

when I consume high protein, careful fat and looking to reduce the overall

caloric intake by watching first carbs, then fats. I watch the kind of fats

carefully ... and watch the glycemic index of my carbs closely. It is

astonishing how much better I feel when I do this, and if I fall off the

nutritional wagon (so to speak) I feel it in a couple of days ... however, it

was this group that has made me see that 2 day delay. This has helped me put

the final pieces in the puzzle ...

I have not been definitively diagnosed as yet, tests just showing

neuromuscular disease and degeneration over the limb-girdle, and exercise

intolerance growing leaps and bounds ... medicos have been using " suspected

mitochondrial myopathy " for a while, however I would dearly love to get a

diagnosis and be done with the search. SIGH.

cheers all

Hi,

Thanks for sharing. It reinforces my ideas about what food groups I do

best with, and I do believe it in contrast to what many mito patients

need, so it is good to get confirmation from others. And yes, RH's

comment about a 2 day delay was a great help also. I also cannot say

thank you enough to all who share their experiences here. It really

does help a lot.

Regards,

Sunny
