Steph's response -- Important for every RSS parent

Steph - thank you for explaning this so well. I am going to print

this!!!

The big thing that happens so often for many of RSS parents is that

our children get vomiting/sick, are not able to eat, begin spilling

ketones (and may or may not have low blood sugar at this time,

because you could be giving them Gatorade only and so their blood

sugar levels may be low but still in the normal range -- but because

they are not eating any carbohydrates, the have no glycogen storage

after 4-6 hours, and hence begin spilling ketones).

The child at this point, if they can not eat, will need an IV with a

very high level of dextrose. The experts recommend D10 with

electrolytes.

You can ask MAGIC for documents #H-28 and H-43, as well as the blue

RSS brochure. Keep these documents on your person or readily

accessible. In any emergency, bring these documents with you to the

hospital or the doctor's office. THey are written by Dr. Harbison,

and explain things in a " physician manner " -- if your ER still has

questions, they can call Dr. H! HA!

It can be scary, because even when you know this well, it can all

slip your mind when some young resident at the ER is saying " we

think your child is just dehydrated " or " your child's blood sugar

levels are find, why don't you just keep giving him fluids and take

him home. " NOT!!!!
