I would follow Dr. Ponseti's advice. He invented this method.

Question about 1 year-olds in dbb

My son is 15 months old and is wearing the dbb 23/7. The doctor told

me he would need to wear it 23/7 for two months, but when I saw his

assistant at the next check-up he told me three months. I don't want

to risk relapse, but I also don't want to risk delayed walking,

although my oldest son didn't walk until 16 months. This boy seems

like he would've been walking by now though if it hadn't been for the

casting and dbb. The doctor's assistant also told me after the three

months he would only need to wear it during naps and at night. That

would mean 14-15 hours a day.

Dr. Ponseti told me by e-mail that he could drop from 23/7 to 18-20

hours/day after 2 months. Now I'm totally confused. What have others

with children this age done?

I would go with Dr. Ponseti's advice - seems your doctor is also on

par with that advice. The 'norm' is usually 3 months of 23/7 but

with your son's advanced age, both your doctor and Dr. Ponseti may

feel that actual weight bearing (as in cruising/walking) may be just

as effective as that extra month.

It may be a good idea to discuss with your doctor the advice that you

received from Dr. Ponseti about when to reduce hours and by how much

to reduce them.

Dr Ponseti releases the older kids earlier because of the walking factor. It is

more theraputic for them to be up on their feet cruising and/or walking than to

be in the brace.

He apparently doesn't release all older children early

because he still told us 3 months. It's a sore point

for me because Kelsey wants to be free so badly and I

can't let her. If he had told me 2 months, I would

have went with it.
