Guest guest
Hi Everybody! Our daughter Agata is 6,5 month old. She still doesn't keep her head when she lies on her back or on her tummy. She has been rehabilitated NDT-Bobathis Method and Sensorial Integration since third month of her life. In Poland we are not in contact with any family who has a child with RSS, so we don't n know what methods of rehabilitation they use. We would like to konw what methods you use , what kind of exercises you do with yor chidren and how quickly you achive a good effect. Please tell usabout your experiences in that . With kind regards Dorota & Witek from Poland ( parents : Marta - 5 years old non RSS , Agata - 6,5 month ; 7,3 lbs; 22 inch)
Guest guest
Dear Withold, It is hard for RSS babies to hold their heads up because their head is large for their body. It happens, but it happens later. It also seems that when they begin to reach their milestones, they come quickly. For example, it takes a long time for them to get to where they can lift their head and turn over and then only a month or two later, they are scooting. I think no one has answered you about what type of rehabilitation they have used because we do not know! In United States, if your baby is behind on milestones, a therapist from the State or the local school district comes to your home and works with your child once a week, but they do not necessarily explain the names of the methods they use. What I remember about 's therapy when he was as young as Agata is that the therapist brought bright, stimulating toys which would make music and lights if he would reach out his hand and push a button or pull a lever or bang something so that he would feel happy for using his muscles. Our therapist also suggested that we buy him blocks, a 'sorting' toy and a toy which allows the child to stack things in order. We have one here that looks like larger and smaller colored donuts or bagels that stack on a stem in order. Most of the therapy I have seen used here is 'play-based' therapy, not just exercising muscles. I think that results are very different for each child. Much has to do with how affected they are. If a child is very small and is having problems getting enough calories, they are not able to develop muscle very quickly. Others have less problems and grow quickly. I think that it can never hurt a baby to be played with and talked to and to have her arms and legs gently moved and massaged. Also, if you just know that it will just take her a little longer to get to her milestones, you will feel better. From what I have read on the listserve, it is not unusual for our infants to be several months behind and then catch up later. They crawl anywhere between 7 and 13 or 14 months. They walk anytime between 12 and 24 or 25 months. Some may even be later than that. I hope that you and Agata stay well.
